Johann Strauss I
Johann Strauss was Austrian and born on March 14th, 1804. During his life he
created many different well known pieces. He is most notable for the Radetzky-Marsch.
Aside from that piece, he also created many waltz’s as well as galops, polkas, and
marches. During the life of Johann Strauss Sr. he had five children. Of the three
children one notable one was Johann Strauss II. Johann Strauss II grew up to be a
successful composer like his father and grew to be known as the Waltz King.
The early life of Johann Strauss I was not a particularly happy one, his mother
passed away when he was just seven years old, and his father was found drowned in a
river when he was 12. Since he lost both parents his guardian set him up with an
apprenticeship with a local bookbinder. During his time there he also took lessons on
the violin and viola. Eventually Johann was offered a position on the local orchestra and
then later left to join a popular string quartet.
During his time in the string quartet he was given the position of deputy
conductor of an orchestra from a mentor he had met during the string quartet days.
Eventually he had the idea of writing his own music to achieve success and put an end
to his financial problems. It wasn’t long until many people had heard of works written by
Johann Strauss I. Johann quickly became known as one of the best composers in
Vienna.
Johann Strauss I was very clear to his children that he didn’t want any of them to
pursue a music career. Johann wanted his children to become bankers and join the
military. While he was on tour in Europe he took on a mistress and eventually his wife
found out. When this happened she filed for divorce and encouraged her son Johann
Strauss II to follow in his father's footsteps and pursue music. Because of this Johann
Strauss II would live on to produce some very notable pieces as well.
Johann Strauss Sr’s works were very influential to the classical music of the time.
Because of his waltz he wrote his son went on to write them as well and became very
famous for them.
Johann Strauss I later died at age 45 on September 25th, 1849. He went on to
be buried in Vienna at the Doblinger Cemetery next to one of his good friends and
mentors Joseph Lanner.
