Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?
Do Now: Evaluate.
1. (-4)2 ÷ [(6+2)2 - 15 . 4]
2. 7 + (6 × 52 + 3)
3. (-23 - 8 * 5) ÷ 12
√100
Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?
Numerical Expressions are expressions that are composed (made up) of only numbers & operations.
Algebraic Expressions are expressions that are made up of variables, numbers & operations.
Two options:
1. Simplify (combine like terms, distribute or reduce)
*Answer is another expression
2. Evaluate (if you are given the value of the variable)
*Answer is a number
Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?
Ex. 1 - Evaluate 2t2 - 3t + 6 when t = 2.
Step 1 --> Substitute in the value.
Step 2 --> Evaluate the expression.
2(2)2 - 3(2) + 6
= 2(4) - 3(2) + 6
=8-6+6
=8
Aim: How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?
Evaluate x4 + 3x3 – x2 + 6 for x = –3.
(–3)4 + 3(–3)3 – (–3)2 + 6
= 81 + 3(–27) – (9) + 6
= 81 – 81 – 9 + 6
= –3
Evaluate 3x2 – 12x + 4 for x = –2.
