SPECIAL ANIMAL SAFETY PROTOCOL FOR SODIUM ARSENITE IN DRINKING WATER IN MICE AND RATS HIGHLY TOXIC CARCINOGEN Investigator Name: IACUC #: Emergency Phone #: Date: Investigator ResponsibilityNotification of Animal Care: All ResponsibleBasic Precautions: Investigator’s ResponsibilityPosting Requirements: Investigator’s ResponsibilityAdministration: All ResponsibleWater Bottle Handling: RRF ResponsibilityCage Change: DEHS Approval:___________________________ Date: ___________________________ Approval #:__________________________ Research staff will inform animal care staff ahead of time that Sodium Arsenite will be used, and arrangements will be made for housing of animals. Fresh cages will be used for the animals at the time of administration. Signature of research staff who notifies RRF: _________________________ Date of Notification: _________________________ Animal bedding is not to be changed for at least 3 days after the date of administration of Sodium Arsenite. Disposable gown and a 2nd pair of gloves in addition to the usual protective clothing worn. This SASP will be posted on the door of the room in which the animals will be housed. Cages will be labeled with a red card denoting “Sodium Arsenite in Drinking Water-Do Not Change Water Bottle” along with the date of administration. The appropriate drug will be administered in drinking water. Follow dosage and precautions in Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). RRF staff will supply clean water bottles marked with a colored dot. Research staff will be responsible for handling the arsenic-laden water including filling, refilling the bottles, and placing them on the cages. The rinse water and any unconsumed water will be collected as Hazardous Waste in a DEHS supplied carboy. After rinsing the water bottles the research staff will label the bottles “BrdU-Double Wash.” The first cage change after each drug administration is to be done by the animal care technicians no sooner than 3 days after the administration. The bedding is considered contaminated and requires special handling. Transfer the animals to clean cages. Replace the tops on the soiled cages and place in a heavyweight plastic bag. Twist the ends of full bags, goose-neck, and seal with tape. Label with wide tape or other type of label marked “Sodium Arsenite.” Remove the sign from the door of the room housing the animals and the red cage cards. Animal care technicians transport the bags of soiled cages to a HEPA filtered dumping station that draws air away from the user. After this first cage change there is no need for further special precautions to be taken regarding the animals or the cages as long as the animals have not received any more Sodium Arsenite.
