TO: Beth Dobkin, Provost FROM: Valerie Burke, Chair Academic Senate DATE: May 20, 2015 RE: Senate Action S-14/15-39 Commendation of Brother Robert Schieler, FSC At the April 8, 2015 meeting of the Academic Senate, the attached Commendation of Brother Robert Schieler, FSC was unanimously approved. This action was assigned Senate Action # S-14/15-39. Attachment cc: President James A. Donahue Vice President Carole Swain The Academic Senate Saint Mary’s College of California In Commendation of Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, Superior General, Brothers of the Christian Schools, on behalf of the Faculty, Students, and Administration of Saint Mary’s College of California, in Convocation assembled, the 22 nd day of April, 2015. Mindful of Brother Robert’s original and enduring vocation to education in the light of faith, under the charism of the Founder, a vocation pursued in the United States and in the Republic of the Philippines, in secondary and university classrooms, and cultivated through baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral studies at LaSalle College, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Pennsylvania; and Mindful that Brother Robert’s organizational talents, early manifest, induced his superiors to invest him with supervisory responsibilities of increasing scope and consequence: school principal in the Philippines and the United States; Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Iligan, the Philippines; then, at age thirty-eight, responsibility for all Philippine schools in the Institute’s charge; and Mindful that, recalled to the Baltimore Province, where he had received the Brothers’ habit in 1968, Brother Robert embarked on a course of leadership which would take him from Assistant Provincial and Director of Education, to Director of Education for the Institute’s U.S.Toronto Region, to Provincial of the Baltimore Province, and thence to Rome, as General Councilor for the U.S.-Toronto Region, then as Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools; and Mindful, that, as General Councilor and as Superior General, Brother Robert has especially promoted solidarity in loving service to all among the Institute’s students, through the movement of Young Lasallians, and among the Brothers and their Partners, “Associated for Mission”; and Mindful, above all, that Brother Robert’s manifold contributions to the Work, respondent ever to the diversities of the Lasallian world and to the signs of changing times, nonetheless testify, as one, to evangelical humility radiating evangelical zeal: We, therefore, the Members of the Academic Senate of Saint Mary’s College, on behalf of this Lasallian community of learning, extend to Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, deep gratitude for his exemplary service to the Lasallian community worldwide; and, through the intercession of his brother and preceptor, Saint John Baptist de la Salle, we commend Brother Robert and his continuing work to the sustaining Grace of Almighty God. Given at Saint Mary’s College of California on this, the 22nd day of April, in the year of Our Lord, 2015.
