Pitcher Plant
(Sarracenia )
The pitcher plants of the genus
Sarracenia is a division of
carnivorous plants found
throughout bogs and low wet
areas of temperate north America
and the eastern seaboard. The
plants are often recognized by
their unusual leaves that are
developed into pitcher like
structures for capturing insects to
be consumed as nutrition. The
plants subsist mostly on insects for
nutrition due to the poor soil
quality of their natural habitat.
Various members of the Sarracenia
family have become endangered
due to habitat destruction and
drainage.
The Pitcher plant can be found in
wetland areas of southern and
coastal Georgia.
Distribution:
Throughout the eastern United
States and central to eastern
Canada.
