Sea level rise effects 3. Economic cost estimation of sea level rise 4. Sea level rise mitigation measures 5. Summary ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 1.Climate change projections for Croatia • • Climate change is a long-term change of the climate patterns There might be changes as follows: Weather conditions Relocation of climate events More extreme weather conditions Such factors will result following effects: sea level rise; adaptive capacity of ecosystem; changes in global water system; health impacts; increase in extreme weather events ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 2. Impacts of the sea level rise • Sea level rise - global rise of the average sea level • Acording to the IPCC, the global SLR estimation in the second half of the 20th century achieved 1.8±0-3 mm/per year ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 2. Impacts of the sea level rise • Territory covers 31,067 km2 area • Coastline is 5835 km • 1246 islands and islets – 47 of them are inhabited ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 2. Impacts of the sea level rise • In case of the significant sea level rise we could expect: – Threat to commercial and fishing ports – Possible contamination of the coastal freshwater springs – Potential damage to wetlands and swamps – Fast coastal erosion might result destruction of the submerged beaches – Tourism and other recreational business depending on the coastal areas surely would be affected. ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 3. Economic cost estimation of the sea level rise • Our model of the economic cost estimation of the sea level rise applies to the following components: • • • Costs of land loss Costs of realocating people Costs of coastal zones protection ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 3. Economic cost estimation of the sea level rise 50 cm rise – 7,6 blrd + 1,3 mlrd/per year EUR 88 cm rise – 9,6 blrd + 1,3 mlrd/per year EUR ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 4. Sea level rise mitigation measures • Applicable adaptiation measures could be groupped into three strategies below: Protection Accommodation Retreat ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija 5. Summary • • Sea level rise will bring numerous problems and costs! We must apprehend and be prepared to this situation! Thank you for your attention!
