(1404 - 1472) A Florentine mathematician, artist, and writer who emphasized the study of nature and balance in art. He wrote several treatises on the arts, one of which became the blueprint for mathematically based linear perspective. Major works: Art-theory treatises: De Pittura (On Painting), 1436; De Re Aedificatoria (On Architecture), ca. 1460. Proportion The relationship of a part to the whole; in art, the system of creating balance and symmetry among the different parts of an artwork. Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446) A Florentine architect, engineer, and artist who is credited with being the first person to use geometry as a basis for linear perspective in painting. Major works: Architecture: Dome of the Cathedral of Florence, 1419 - 1436; Ospedale degli Innocenti, 1419 - ca. 1445; Pazzi Chapel, 1441 - 1460. Masaccio (1401 - 1428) A Florentine Renaissance painter who was among the first artists to use geometry and vanishing points to create perspective on a flat surface. Major works: Madonna with Child and Angels, 1426; Brancacci Chapel frescoes, Florence, 1424. Renaissance Naturalism An artistic movement developed throughout the Renaissance that depicted objects realistically, as they appeared in a natural setting, with accuracy and precise attention to detail. Brancacci Chapel frescoes A series of frescoes, painted for Florence's Brancacci Chapel in 1424, in which linear perspective and a single light source are used. Medici family A powerful family from Florence, Italy, whose wealth and political influence endured for several centuries, allowing them to become the leading patrons of Renaissance art. Piero della Francesca (1415 - 1492) A Florentine artist known for his Humanist approach to art and his contributions to the field of geometry. Major works: Flagellation of Christ, ca. 1460; On Perspective for Painting art-theory treatise, ca. 1470. Flagellation of Christ An Early Renaissance painting by Piero della Francesca (ca. 1460); it is famous for its proportion and compositional balance in which the viewer completes the scene. Sandro Botticelli (ca. 1445 - 1510) A leading Florentine artist of the Early Renaissance who painted many religious and mythological images. Major works: Primavera, ca. 1482; The Birth of Venus, ca. 1485. The Birth of Venus A tempera painting by Sandro Botticelli, circa 1486, that depicts the goddess Venus after she has emerged from the sea. It highlights Botticelli's focus on the poetic elements of the Classical world. It does not use perspective and has the S-shaped curves typical of the International Gothic style. Giovanni Bellini (ca. 1435 - 1516) A Venetian painter credited with introducing the Renaissance style in his native Venice; he is known for his use of oil paint and color, and for restoring the landscape to a primary focus rather than a backdrop. Major works: St. Francis in Ecstasy, 1480; Transfiguration of Christ, ca. 1487. Titian (ca. 1488 - 1576) An Italian Renaissance painter, known for his versatility, who led the 16th-century Venetian school and was a master of color. Major works: Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap, ca. 1516; Madonna with Saints and Members of the Pesaro Family, 1519 - 1526; Bacchus and Ariadne, ca. 1520. Virgin, ca. 1481. Portinari Altarpiece A large triptych by Hugo van der Goes depicting the adoration of the infant Jesus. Painted circa 1475, it is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance symbolism. It is the only work securely documented as being by Van der Goes. Reformation A 16th-century movement in Europe that aimed to reform Roman Catholicism and resulted in the formation of the Protestant Church. Lucas van Leyden (1494 - 1533) An imaginative Dutch artist whose reputation was built mainly on his mastery of engraving. Major work: The Baptism of Christ, 1510. The Baptism of Christ An intricate engraving composed of many figures and completed circa 1510 by Lucas van Leyden. Quentin Massys (1466 - 1530) A Belgian painter and founder of the Antwerp School whose work displayed strong religious sentiment and often grotesque realism. Also spelled "Metsys." Major works: The Holy Kinship, ca. 1508; The Banker and his Wife, 1514; The Grotesque Old Woman, 1515. Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1525 - 1569) A Dutch painter and printer known for his genre paintings that combined vivid landscapes with depictions of peasant life. Major works: The Battle Between Carnival and Lent, 1559; The Harvesters, 1565; The Parable of the Blind, 1568. Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) A German Renaissance painter, printer, and art theorist whose vast body of work and unrivaled mastery of woodcuts earned him an impressive reputation at an early age. Woodcuts Prints created by rolling ink over a carved wooden surface and transferring the ink to paper. The Apocalypse of St. John A series of woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer depicting scenes from the book of Revelation. Published in 1498, these popular and influential works helped to secure his reputation as a Renaissance master. Melencolia I A 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer. It is one of the most heavily debated artworks from the northern Renaissance. Many think it symbolizes Dürer's genius, at times suffering and at times inspired. Matthias Grünewald (1470 - 1528) A German painter of religious material who ignored the trends of the Renaissance and instead continued late medieval artistic traditions. His work is known for its vivid depiction of color and light. Major work: Isenheim Altarpiece, 1512 - 1516. Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450 - 1516) A Dutch painter about whom little is known. His unconventional style set him apart from the Flemish tradition that influenced him. Major work: The Garden of Earthly Delights, ca. 1503. The Garden of Earthly Delights An ambitious 1504 triptych depicting the progression of sin throughout history. It is Hieronymus Bosch's most famous work and is known for its complex symbolism and vivid imagery. Isenheim Altarpiece A large and complex altarpiece by German painter Matthias Grünewald that depicts the crucifixion, annunciation, and resurrection of Christ. The Grotesque Old Woman A 1515 work by Quentin Massys. It is sometimes viewed as a metaphorical portrait of a duchess known for her marital infidelity. Still life An artwork in which inanimate objects are the main focus, commonly involving fruit, flowers, and other daily objects. The Peasant Dance A circa 1566 work by Dutch Renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder that depicts a group of peasants drinking, dancing, and enjoying themselves. Vanitas Latin for "vanity"; it is a type of still life created as a reminder of the fleeting nature and futility of existence.
