Certificate for Audio Visual Industries Induction - Unit 003
Task A – Produce a report

Introduction
I will be discussing the theory of persistence of vision and exploring both analogue and digital formats in the
audio and video industries.
Persistence of vision
The concept of persistence of vision means that even one billionth of a second of exposure to an image results in
milliseconds, ‘one thousand of a second’ of reaction sight from the retina to the optic nerve.
According to critics the myth of persistence of vision refers to the mistaken belief that human perception of
motion (brain centred) is the result of persistence of vision (eye centred). The myth was debunked ‘shown to be
false’ in 1912 by Wertheimer.
A critical part of understanding these visual perception phenomena is that the eye is not a camera: there is no
"frame rate" or "scan rate" in the eye; instead, the eye/brain system has a combination of motion detectors, detail
detectors and pattern detectors, of which each output is combined to create the visual experience.
Analogue to digital conversion
Essentially an ADC converts sound waves into binary digits.
ADC is an electronic device that converts an input analog voltage (or current) to a digital number.
Here are a list of digital devices used in the AV industries
Digital camera
Mp3 player
I pod
I phone
Digital audio broadcaster
Advantages of digital technologies in the AV industries
Digital electronics are electronics systems that use digital signals.
One main advantage of digital in terms of distributing AV digital files is the fact that when an audio or visual
data file is stored onto a computer it can be sent to anybody in the world by a single click of a finger via email
etc. In contrast an analogue tape would have to be physically sent via post.
An advantage of digital circuits when compared to analog circuits is that signals represented digitally can be
transmitted without degrading because of noise. For example, a continuous audio signal, transmitted as a
sequence of 1s and 0s, can be reconstructed without error provided the noise picked up in transmission is not
enough to prevent identification.
An I phone has the ability to store up to 60 gigabites of digital data which is great a benefit to the consumer
because they can store hundreds of music albums and films on one device intead of physically carrying a cds or
a dvd player. This device can also has a gps function which can helps to navigate the individual more in a sort
space of time in comparison to a physical map. Thus this case digital proves to save the individual time and
money.
Conclusion
To conclude I have explored the theory of persistence of vision which has been deemed a flawed theory based
on the misconception that the eye emulates the lens of a camera.
I have also outlined the advantages of digital technologies in the audio and visual industries.
Although that digital has its advantages in terms of replicating audio & visual files I think analogue remains
superior because of its ability to capture quality sound.
