ESBL
(Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase)
ESBL is a chemical that is made by some bacteria (germs). This chemical helps the germs become resistant to newer antibiotics. Using more antibiotics seems to make bacteria “turn on” ESBL production and become more resistant to treatment. Different organisms can produce ESBL. The most common ones are E. coli and Klebsiella.
Treating the Infection There are not many antibiotics that kill the ESBL producing bacteria. Because of this, these infections are not easy to treat. Your doctor will find the right antibiotic to treat you.
Preventing the Spread The ESBL bacteria act the same as regular E. coli and Klebsiella. They are spread by touching other things such as:

hands

surfaces

patient equipment The ESBL producing bacteria are no more harmful or contagious than other bacteria. Because they are harder to treat, patients with ESBL are put in contact isolation. The reason for this isolation is to prevent the spread of the germs to other patients.
