Ray: a line that starts at one point (vertex) and extends indefinitely in one
direction.
Acute angle: an angle between 0° and 90°.
Right angle: an angle that is perpendicular (90°).
Straight angle: an angle that forms a straight line (180°).
Obtuse angle: an angle between 90° and 180°.
Degrees, minutes, seconds example: 34° 37' 42".
Degrees decimal example: 34.6283 .
Polygon: a closed plane figure having three or more sides. Each side is
connected at a common endpoint called a vertex. Poly means many and gon
means side, therefore a polygon is a figure with many sides.
The triangle is a rigid figure since its shape will not change unless one side
changes in length. It is the only rigid polygon. All other polygons can change
their shape by pivoting a side about a vertex. Therefore, a triangle is great for
building a rigid structure.
The interior angles of a triangle always add to 180°.
Triangles:
Scalene triangle: all sides are unequal.
Isosceles triangle: exactly two sides are equal.
Equilateral triangle: All sides are equal.
Right triangle: has one right angle (90°). The sides adjacent to the right angle
are called legs of the right triangle and the side opposite the right angle is
called the hypotenuse.
Pythagorean Theorem: a2 + b2 = c2 This formula is used to solve right
triangles. If you know two sides of a right triangle, you can solve for the third
side using this formula.
Circle: all the points in a plane equal distance from one point called its center.
A circle has 360°.
Radius: a straight-line segment from the center of a circle to any point on the
circle.
Chord: a line segment with both endpoints on a circle.
Diameter: a chord that passes through the center. It is usually abbreviated as
d. Its length is twice the length of the radius. d = 2r
Arc: a segment of a circle from one point to another along the curve of the
circle.
Circumference: the distance around a circle. It is usually abbreviated as C.
C=πd or C = 2πr.
Pi(π) ≈ 3.14
Area of a circle: A = πr2
Linear measurement: the distance on a straight line between two points.
