Norelle Scott is a New Zealand screenwriter, script consultant, and
playwright, currently based in Los Angeles.
Norelle wrote ‘Rud’s Wife’ (short film) with Alison MacLean and ‘User Friendly’
(feature film) with Frank Stark and Gregor Nicholas. Her screenplay ‘Uncle’s
Story’ (adapted from the novel by Witi Ihimaera) won the Antipodean Screenplay
Award at the Cinema des Antipodes Festival in St. Tropez.
Norelle has written for a number of television series including ‘True Life Stories’
‘Shortland Street’, ‘Homeward Bound’, ‘Marlin Bay’, ‘Gloss’ and ‘Shark in the
Park’. She also script edited the award winning television drama series ‘Aroha’
and was the story executive and script editor for the ‘Tala Pasifika’ Drama Series.
She has worked as a script consultant in New Zealand and the USA.
Norelle’s play ‘Promise Not To Tell’ received critical acclaim for its productions in
Auckland, Wellington and London and was selected for the 4th Women
Playwrights International Conference in Galway. Her theatrical adaptation of
Stevan Eldred-Grigg’s novel ‘Oracles and Miracles’ toured New Zealand to
packed houses and enthusiastic reviews. ‘Would I Lie To You?’ was an Adam
Playwright Awards finalist and represented New Zealand at the British Council
New Playwriting Awards. Norelle was commissioned by Lethal Set to write
‘mother/whaea/tama/son’ for the AK07 Festival. She has been a resident
playwright at Theatre Corporate and the Mercury Theatre.
Norelle has lectured at the University of Auckland, AUT University and Unitec.
She was the Head of the Directing and Writing Major at Unitec, School of
Performing and Screen Arts from 2002 -2004 and Head of Writing Pathway from
1999-2002. She received the Staff Trust award for teaching excellence at Unitec.
She has extensive experience teaching drama to children and young adults.
Norelle researched script development at the Sundance Screenwriting Lab in
Utah to for the New Zealand Writers Guild. In 2011 she received a Professional
Development Award from the New Zealand Film Commission to study with the
Script Factory in the U.K. She is a member of Women in Film Los Angeles, The
Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights and the New Zealand Writers Guild.
Norelle has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Film Television and
Media Studies and a B.A. Honors (first class) in Women’s Studies from the
University of Auckland. She also has a Certificate in Higher Education from
Unitec and a Diploma in Acting from Theatre Corporate.
Recent commissioned screenplays include ‘One of Us’ with C.P.D Films and
‘Inside Dope’ for producer Murray Francis, Film Business. Current projects
include ‘The Unspoken Message of a Painting’ with director Kathy McRae.
