Paediatric Infectious Diseases Introduction The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship programme was initiated by the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Aga Khan University in 2006. This programme aims to provide unique training opportunities in infectious diseases (ID) of children to trainees with specialty training and certification in paediatrics. The long term aim is to prepare a cadre of leading physicians who will provide the evidence-based solutions needed to reduce the burden of childhood infections of major public health importance in Pakistan and other developing countries. Training Structure and Organization The fellowship is three years long and is recognized by the College of Physician and Surgeons of Pakistan. The training programme will achieve its goals by building complementary competencies in clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory sciences related to infectious diseases. Clinical skills will be built via exposure to inpatient and outpatient care including exposure to off-site specialty clinics rotation (tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases), adult infectious diseases rotation and infections in immunocompromised hosts. Fellows will also be involved in hospital infection control activities throughout the year. Dedicated time will be assigned for microbiology laboratory experience. Last but not least, pursuit of formal courses in epidemiology, biostatistics and research methods will be emphasized and facilitated. Completion of research projects under faculty supervision and acceptance of at least two first author papers in an indexed journal prior to conclusion of the fellowship is an important requirement. Goals & Objectives The programme aims to develop through structured long term training, highly skilled individuals with the knowledge, clinical acumen, and research training to become clinical specialists and independent investigators in paediatric infectious diseases.
