Name the five stages of animal nutrition.
Explain why animals need to digest food.
State the meaning of a carnivore, a herbivore and an omnivore.
State the functions of teeth in
(a) man
(b) a lion respectively.
State the importance of teeth in facilitating digestion.
Distinguish between physical (mechanical) digestion and chemical digestion.
Give three examples of physical digestion and state the organ/digestive juice involved in
each case.
Name the enzyme involved in the digestion of starch, proteins and lipids and state the
final products of the digestion of these foods.
Name the four types of teeth in man and state one function for each
Name the hardest part of a mammalian tooth and state its function.
Give two reasons why the tooth is regarded as a living tissue
Name the central cavity of a mammalian tooth and two tissues found within it.
Describe how tooth decay occurs.
The following statements describe how tooth decay can be prevented. Name the type of
dental care methods/materials involved:
(a) removal of food debris between tooth crevices
(b) showing up plaques on teeth
(c) reducing acid levels on teeth
(d) increases resistance of teeth to corrosion by acid
What is the term used to describe the part of the body through which foods pass.
Name the process by which food passes through the alimentary canal. Name the nutrient
which promotes such process in the intestine.
Name the parts of the alimentary canal when physical digestion occurs
Explain why the contents of the stomach is highly acidic.
State the functions of the stomach.
Describe how the liver and gall bladder help the digestion of fats
State the functions of pancreas in facilitating the digestion of carbohydrates.
Describe how the digestion of proteins in an egg takes place in various parts of the
human alimentary canal. State the end product of protein digestion.
Explain why an over-secretion of gastric juice by the stomach can result in indigestion
in man.
How will the digestion of fats be affected if the gall bladder is removed in an operation
[手術]. Explain your answer.

which carry these end products away from the small intestine.
Describe the fate of excess amino acids in the human body.

1.
The five stages of animal nutrition are:
Ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, egestion (1 each)
Food taken by animals are mainly large, complex, insoluble compounds which cannot
pass through cell membranes
Through digestion, these foods are converted into simpler, soluble compounds which
are small enough to pass through the cell membranes of / to be absorbed by the cells of
the villus
Carnivore:
Animal which feeds on meat/other animals/animal tissue
Herbivore:
Animal which feeds on plants
Omnivore:
Animal which feeds on both plant and animal

Man’s teeth break up the food into smaller pieces which
are easier to swallow
and increase the surface area of food for digestion of food by enzymes
Lion’s teeth are used to capture and kill prey and
