Quinte Health Care (QHC) and KGH Diagnostic Imaging
MRI Contingency Plan for QHC MRI downtime March 10-April 22, 2017
The QHC MRI machine will be out of service March 10-April 22 to undergo a required upgrade.
The following procedure must be followed during the planned downtime. Access to emergent/urgent
(P1, P2) MRI scans will be provided by Kingston General Hospital (KGH) Imaging Department.
Procedure
For ER and inpatient P1 and P2 MRI requests. (P1 to be done within 24 hours and P2 are to be done
within 48 hrs)
a) Monday to Friday 08:00-16:00
 Send fully completed MRI requisition via the QHC tube system to the QHC DI dept.
 The QHC MRI tech will review the request for appropriateness and help ensure
necessary information to proceed with the request.
 The QHC MRI Tech will fax the request to the KGH MRI Dept at 613-548-2413 attention
URGENT MRI
 The Kingston MRI radiologist will discuss with the ordering physician as needed.
 If EMERGENT P1 request for MRI to be done same day, QHC physician will arrange for
patient to be referred to and accepted by KGH MRP (most responsible physician) of
appropriate service or ED. MRI requisition would be generated internally at KGH after
the patient assessed by the MRP.
b) Monday to Friday 16:00 to 08:00 & weekend and holiday coverage
 Call 613-549-6666 dial 0 (switchboard)
 Ask for radiology resident on call
 A fully completed requisition must be faxed to 613-548-2413. Priority of the MRI will be
determined, screened, protocolled etc.
 The QHC requesting physician must contact the KGH ER physician to ensure they will
accept the patient through ER before any plans are made to transfer the patient. Both
KGH radiology resident or radiologist and ER physician must accept the patient.
 The Resident will notify KGH MRI technologist that a case is coming from QHC.
1. Patients must be transferred to KGH with a QHC nurse to provide care including pain
medication, anti-nausea medication and sedation.
2. Patients scheduled for Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00 must be booked as a stay and return.
As noted above, patients requiring imaging outside of the above times will be required to go
through the KGH emergency department. It will be the responsibility of the sending/ordering
physician to arrange with the KGH ER department.
3. Patients must have a recent (within 45 days) Creatinine and GFR done and these results must be
printed out of Meditech and sent with the MRI requisition.
4. Patients should be sent with necessary medications and a bagged lunch.
