Skin Disease in the Community (80 minutes) Introduction 2 minutes Introductions, agree the learning objectives with the students, amend if necessary. By the end of this session, students should be able to discuss the impact of skin problems on the individual list the common skin complaints seen in the community adopt a logical approach to describing the signs of a skin condition relate signs to the underlying pathology Ensure all have completed Preparatory Work 1 minute Each student should be prepared to discuss the case histories of one or two patients presenting to the GP with a skin problem (age, sex, history of complaint, why the patient presented now, description of signs, approach to management) Buzz Groups of 4 students Why might a patient present with a skin problem? What anxieties might the doctor need to address? Report back to the main group 2 minutes 5 minutes Brainstorm 15 minutes Determine common dermatology problems by discussing the patients seen with GPs: age, sex, problem and generate a simple categorisation: e.g. tumours, infections, inflammatory, wounds. Work in Small Groups determined by problem 10 minutes Agree a logical approach to examining the patient, describing and understanding the signs: distribution, morphology-scale, lichenification, erythema, oedema, vesicles, purpura Tea break Discussion in Main Group 10 minutes Agree how to approach description and classification of signs: symmetrical /asymmetrical; scale / no scale erythema / purpura; flat / palpable Discuss how signs might link to pathology. Work in Pairs Discuss how problems were managed 10 minutes Plenary 20 minutes Review examples and discuss management Review signs using slides-describe signs-formative assessment. Closure 5 minutes Review learning objectives; summary of what has been discussed Evaluation 3-minute exercise-complete form.
