Every right triangle has one right angle, two acute angles, one hypotenuse, and two legs.
To solve a right triangle means to determine the measures of all six parts. You can solve a right
triangle if you know either of the following:
 Two side lengths
 One side length and one acute angle
Solve the right triangle. Round answers to the nearest tenth.
Ex 1.
Solve the right triangle. Round answers to nearest tenth.
Ex 2.
Use the right triangle shown to solve the triangle. Round answers to nearest tenth.

Application of Right Triangle Trigonometry
Learning Targets: Students will be able to solve application problems using right triangle trig.
Angle of Elevation
Angle of Depression
Ex 1. You are measuring the height of a flag pole. You stand 19 feet from the base of the pole.
You measure the angle of elevation from a point on the ground to the top of the pole to be 64 0.
Estimate the height of the pole.
Ex 2. A new store is being built. An escalator is planned. It will make an angle 34  with the floor. If
the vertical distance between floors is 14 feet, how long will the escalator be (dotted line)?
Ex 3. To find the distance d from a house on shore to a house on an island, a surveyor measures
from the hose on shore to a point B, as shown in the diagram. An instrument called a transit is
used to find the measure of  B . Estimate the distance d.
Ex 4. Supposed you stand at the top of a ski slope and look down at the bottom. The vertical drop
is the difference in the elevations of the top and bottom of the slop. Find the vertical drop x of the
slope in the diagram. Then estimate the distance d a person skiing would travel on this slope.
