TITLE
Required imaging at osteosarcoma
BACKGROUND
Osteosarcoma is the most common bone tissue sarcoma, which mainly occurs in childhood
and adolescents. There are no specific patterns of complaints. Swelling and pain are the
only complaints where patients suffer from.
At diagnosis, an osteosarcoma is often only localized. Metastases at diagnosis are there in
15-20 % of the cases. The current therapy exists of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and surgery.
With this therapy 60-70% of all patient will cured.
Imaging is essential to create an optimal treatment. Both orthopedic surgery and pediatric
oncologist need imaging to obtain specific information that will influence therapeutic decision
making. Especially local staging is very important.
There is a European and American treatment protocol. However in this protocol there is
hardly information about imaging. This results in different guidelines in Europe. The
guidelines between Europe and USA are not alike.
A uniform imaging guideline is necessary for providing the essential information considering
planning the optimal treatment.
PURPOSE
Create an literature (evidence ) based guideline for the imaging strategy in patients with an
osteosarcoma.
DESIGN
Clinical interviews to explore what the pediatric oncologist and the orthopedic surgery need
to know from imaging.
Literature search to explore evidence based guidelines in this perspective .
We used as a guideline ‘Evidence-based richtlijnontwikkeling’ from the CBO.
