Using BigBlueButton: Oral Communication in Online Courses Faculty Development Days January 2015 Heeyoung Kim, Ph.D. Director of Faculty Development, The Teaching and Learning Center Maria Sanchez, Ph.D. Professor, Department of Accounting, College of Business Administration Darrell Bartholomew, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Marketing, Advertising and Legal Studies, College of Business Administration Rider University 2 3 Objectives } To discuss students' perceptions of using BigBlueButton to facilitate the delivery and assessment of students' oral presentation in the online business courses } To introduce an example Oral Communication method in online course using Canvas Conference (BigBlueButton)Tool 4 Purpose of the Case Study } review recent research studies in order to better understand the assessment of oral communication skills in online courses and } explore students' perceptions of using a specific web conference system to prepare oral presentation in online courses 5 Importance of Oral Communication Skills 6 Importance of Oral Communication Skills } always cited among the most important proficiencies for college graduates } achieving competence in oral communication has been widely endorsed as an important ingredient in the preparation of accounting students (Smythe & Nikolai, 2002). 7 Importance of Oral Communication Skills } AACSB (Business Accreditation Standards) } A key skill for any business graduate is communicating ideas orally to peers or audience. 8 Oral Communication Skills in Online Courses 9 Oral Communication Skills in Online Courses One of the greatest challenges faced by online course instructors is the providing the oral communication experience 10 Oral Communication Skills in Online Courses } most online classes do not have the oral communication component, even if the course should have a major component in oral communication (Gentry 2008) } do not have the chance to participate in oral presentation, and thus miss out the learning in most online courses (Green, 2008) 11 Literature Review } Garrison and Vaughan (2008) suggest that “in blended learning face-to-face oral communication and online written communication are optimally”. } Students can personally record the presentation, store in Youtute, and share with teacher and the classmates. The visual is extremely crucial in the learning process. I think that every week some form of visual interaction is key to the full educational experience. Total inflections, facial expressions, body movement make up the foundation of intellectual thoughts and opinions that are presented. I feel that without the visual the course lacks the depth necessary for getting your money's worth. 23 Greatest Advantage Makes the class more personable It helps us develop oral presentation in a video type format. We have to do more, but it would be very helpful to get some training with an expert on how to maximize the tool for a self development. } Oral presentations allow students to feel more connected with the class when taking an online course. } Learning the content Comfort is speaking. While not in front of people and you have the ability to "redo" its very good for shy folks to get comfortable in making presentations. } 24 Greatest Advantage } Learning how to uses tool } Learning the tool, and balance looking at the camera and the slides. 25 Greatest Barrier } “I learned more about the material. It was similar to preparing and presenting a presentation in class” } “More detail about the assignment” } “challenging but very insightful. it is the future, we need to do more. It is very hard to concentrate on the camera and looking at the slides, and you have to really know what you are going to talk about. “ } I was able to become more familiar with my classmate and their style of presenting material they researched. 26 What did you learn from doing the oral presentation in an online course?
