Importance of Oral Communication
Skills
}  always
cited among the most
important proficiencies for college

communication has been widely
endorsed as an important ingredient
in the preparation of accounting

Oral Communication Skills in Online
Courses
One of the greatest challenges faced by
online course instructors is the
providing the oral communication
experience
10
Oral Communication Skills in Online
Courses
}  most
online classes do not have the oral
communication component, even if the
course should have a major component in
oral communication (Gentry 2008)
}  do not have the chance to participate in
oral presentation, and thus miss out the
learning in most online courses (Green, 2008)
11
Literature Review
}  Garrison
and Vaughan (2008) suggest that
“in blended learning face-to-face oral
communication and online written
communication are optimally”.
}  Students can personally record the
presentation, store in Youtute, and share
with teacher and the classmates. (Gentry ,
2008., and Younger, Duncan, & Hart, 2013).
12
Literature Review
} Audio
enabled VoiceThread for
the group presentation tool (Chan &
Pallapu, 2012)
}  Voice-over
Hanson, 2012)
13
Power Points (Bridges &
Limitations with suggested method
}  Limited
to record with webcam when
using Youtube
}  Time limitation using Youtube
}  Storage and access problem with PPT
with narration
}  Technical difficulty to use tools
}  Additional steps to creating accounts

BigBlueButton: Conference tool
Share presentation slides
}  Broadcast real-time video and audio
}  Share desktop application
}  Share real-time chat
}  Invite guest not associated with institution or class
}  Provide conference call number
}  Record conferences so students can view them at a
later date
}  Students can create the conference without faculty’s
presence
}

}
That human connection/element that is
missing from online course's.Through the
video the student is able to see those….
The visual is extremely crucial in
the learning process. I think that
every week some form of visual
interaction is key to the full educational
experience. Total inflections, facial
expressions, body movement
make up the foundation of
intellectual thoughts and
opinions that are presented. I feel
that without the visual the course lacks the
depth necessary for getting your money's
worth.
23
Greatest
Advantage
Makes the class more personable It
helps us develop oral presentation in a
video type format. We have to do more,
but it would be very helpful to get some
training with an expert on how to
maximize the tool for a self development.
}  Oral presentations allow students to feel
more connected with the class when
taking an online course.
}  Learning the content Comfort is speaking.
While not in front of people and you have
the ability to "redo" its very good for
shy folks to get comfortable in making
presentations.
}
24
Greatest
Advantage
} Learning
how to uses
tool
} Learning the tool, and
balance looking at the
camera and the slides.
25
Greatest
Barrier
}
“I learned more about the material. It
was similar to preparing and
presenting a presentation in class”
}  “More detail about the assignment”
}  “challenging but very insightful. it is the
future, we need to do more. It is very
hard to concentrate on the camera and
looking at the slides, and you have to
really know what you are going to talk
about. “
}  I was able to become more familiar
with my classmate and their style of
presenting material they researched.

Final thoughts
}  Have
some session earlier in the semester, give
students chance to practice.
}  Group presentation worked better; faculty
could join the group presentation
}  BigBlueButton is working on few technical
limitations
}  Real experience to use an webinar tool for an
interview
