What is the purpose of the research?
The purpose of this research is to develop an innovative approach to nurse education designed to enhance specialist
cancer nurse ability to promote self-management, such as breathing retraining techniques for breathlessness control,
for people living with lung cancer.
Are you looking for people like me?
The research team is looking for people who are living with lung cancer and who are:
Experiencing any symptom/s (such as breathlessness, pain, fatigue)
Are at any stage in the illness
Are at any stage of treatment
Live within a 3-hour radius of Brisbane city.
What will you ask me to do?
Your participation will involve an audio-recorded interview at a location, day and time of your choosing. The
interview will take approximately 1 hour of your time with the possibility of a follow up interview. You will be asked
questions about factors that influence your learning and development. You will also be asked to provide brief
information about your demographics and medical history.
Are there any risks for me in taking part?
As the interview will be approximately 1 hour in length with the possibility of a follow up interview, and the
conversation will include discussion of cancer related issues, there is a possibility of physical and emotional discomfort.
Strategies are in place to manage these risks and full details will be provided should you choose to participate. If you do
agree to participate, you can withdraw from participation at any time during the project.
Are there any benefits for me in taking part?
It is expected that this project will not benefit you directly other than to provide the opportunity for you to explore
what self-management means to you and why. In the future, it may benefit nurses in their abilities to promote selfmanagement for people living with chronic diseases, like cancer.
Will I be compensated for my time?
No, but we would very much appreciate your participation in this research.
Who is funding this research?
A post-graduate scholarship has been obtained from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to
fund this project. The NHMRC will not have access to personally identifying information about you that may be
obtained during the project.
I am interested – what should I do next?
If you would like to participate, please contact Vanessa Brunelli on 07 3138 0135, 0419 681 864
or [email protected] for details of the next step. You will be provided with further
information to ensure that your decision to participate is fully informed. Thank you.
