Pharyngeal Cancer What is the pharynx? The pharynx is a tube-like passageway, about 5 inches long, and is often referred to as the throat. The purpose of the pharynx is to allow air and food to pass to the trachea and esophagus. What is pharyngeal cancer? Cancer of the pharynx is an uncommon cancer and is generally diagnosed as a malignant tumor in the passageway that leads from the back of the nose to the esophagus. Risk factors for this cancer include heavy smoking, and heavy consumption of alcohol. This cancer is more common in men than in women. This cancer can occur in the upper, mid, or bottom region of the pharynx.
