TEAM FINLAND VISIT TO CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, USA
FINANCIAL TECNOLOGY
The proposed ministerial delegation to Charlotte, North Carolina will visit key stakeholders in the financial services
and banking sector to get an understanding of those markets in U.S. and especially the benefits of Charlotte as a
location for such firms.
Job creation in the financial services area as well as in securities has grown substantially in the past 15 years and
financial service currently employ over 17,000 people in Charlotte. The nation’s second largest financial institution
by assets, Bank of America, calls the city home. Additionally also Wachovia and many smaller banks are
headquartered there.
Charlotte became a leading financial center because of its concentration of financial institutions and resources that
offer a wide diversity of size, expertise and organizations. One of Charlotte’s newest affairs is international banking.
Currently there are multiple banks in Charlotte that have international departments and offer foreign currency
exchange, multi-currency loans, trade financing, letters of credit, money transfers and cash management. In
addition to their 6,000 domestic branches, they operate branches and representatives offices in 30 countries
including these financial capitals: Amsterdam, Antwerp, Beijing, Calcutta, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London,
Melbourne, Milan, Paris, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai and many others. International banking has allowed Charlotte
set forth in its journey to become a banking giant.
Thus, the proposed delegation offers an excellent opportunity for Finnish financial and financial technology
companies to present solutions that will enhance the capabilities in the growing North Carolina financial
marketplace.
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 2nd largest city in the southeastern United States. Charlotte is
the 3rd fastest growing major city in the U.S. Charlotte is strategically located and is only a 2 hour plane ride away
from regions where 60 % of the U.S. population resides.
The Charlotte Region has a major base of energy-oriented organizations and has become known as ‘Charlotte USA –
The New Energy Capital’. In the region there are more than 240 companies directly tied to the energy sector.
Charlotte has become a major U.S. financial center and the 2nd largest banking center in the United States after
New York City. The nation’s 2nd largest financial institution by assets, Bank of America, calls the city home.
