Not only will he or she deal with grids in later math classes, but many city streets are arranged in a grid system. This skill will help your child locate places on a map or globe. Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It — DIRECTIONS: Read through the What’s the Point? reference sheet with your parent or guardian. Study the steps needed to locate points on a grid. Then use these same strategies to do the Map Your Bedroom activity page. Talk about It — After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. A grid is made of two axes. The bottom axis is called the x-axis and the left axis is called the y-axis. Points are written with the x number first and the y number second (6, 5). y-axis When you find or label points, you always go over on the x-axis and then up on the y-axis. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 (6, 5) This point is labeled (6, 5) because you go over 6 spaces and up 5 spaces. (3, 2) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 x-axis To plot the point (3, 2), follow the arrows on the grid and go over 3 and up 2. Draw the point and then label it. Grids can also look like this. See how the x-axis shows letters instead of numbers? Many times a map will have letters on one or even both axes. 5 4 3 2 1 0 A B C D E You Do It! If I ask you to tell me where (B, 4) is, what should you do? Plot (B, 4) on the grid. Picture your room as if you were looking down from the ceiling to help you create this floor plan. After you have finished drawing where your items are located, label the grid like a map. It should be labeled with letters across the bottom (or x-axis) and numbers up the left (or y-axis). Then list your items and their points on the right side of the grid. Remember, the bottom axis is listed first and the left axis is listed second, for example, (A, 1).
