Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to plot and identify points on a grid.
Here is your chance to help your child practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

POINTS ON A GRID
Parent Pointer —
Learning to locate a point on a coordinate grid is an important skill for
your child to learn. Not only will he or she deal with grids in later math
classes, but many city streets are arranged in a grid system. This skill
will help your child locate places on a map or globe.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read through the What’s the Point? reference sheet
with your parent or guardian. Study the steps needed to locate points
on a grid. Then use these same strategies to do the Map Your Bedroom
activity page.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show
what you know.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

What’s the Point?
A grid is made of two axes. The bottom axis is called the
x-axis and the left axis is called the y-axis. Points are
written with the x number first and the y number second
(6, 5).
y-axis
When you find
or label points,
you always go
over on the
x-axis and
then up on the
y-axis.

This point is
labeled (6, 5)
because you go
over 6 spaces
and up 5 spaces.

To plot the point (3, 2), follow the arrows on the grid and go
over 3 and up 2. Draw the point and then label it.
Grids can also look like this. See how the x-axis shows
letters instead of numbers? Many times a map will have
letters on one or even both axes.

You Do It!
If I ask you to tell me where (B, 4) is, what should you do?
Plot (B, 4) on the grid.

Map Your Bedroom
Directions: With the help of your parent or guardian, draw where items
are located in your bedroom on the grid below. Picture your room as if
you were looking down from the ceiling to help you create this floor plan.
After you have finished drawing where your items are located, label the
grid like a map. It should be labeled with letters across the bottom (or
x-axis) and numbers up the left (or y-axis). Then list your items and
their points on the right side of the grid. Remember, the bottom axis is
listed first and the left axis is listed second, for example, (A, 1).

The Back Page
Talk about It
Parent —
Ask your child the following question:
9How do you find a point on a grid?
Student —
Answer the above question in complete sentences on the
reverse side of this page.
OR
Do one of the following activities on the reverse side of
this page:
9Draw a map of your classroom and write the points of
where things are located on a separate sheet of
paper. Have your parent or guardian use the map to
write the points for everything you drew then check
his or her answers with your list of points.
9Label a grid with numbers going by ones and starting
at zero on both axes. Have your parent or guardian
give you a list of points to plot. Have him or her
check your work when you are finished.
