Sessions

WA P.E. 5.3.B
Foundational
Key Concept(s) addressed:
 Geometric Sense: Characteristics of triangles and
quadrilaterals
Key Skill(s) addressed:
 Identify, sketch, and measure acute, right and
obtuse angles (5.3.B)
Language addressed: angle, acute angle, acute triangle, obtuse, right, degrees, equilateral triangle, line, line segment,
vertex
Crafting:
 The Launch section of the lesson in the Teacher’s Guide, p. 47, offers good opening questions to ask the
students.
 Model estimating and then using the angle ruler to measure some of the angles of the shapes.
 Model both methods – aligning the rivet of the ruler over a vertex, and aligning both arms of the angle ruler with
two sides of a shape.
Composing:
 Have students work with a partner to measure angles of particular shapes. Students complete Problems A
through D on page 34 and 35 in the Student Book.
Reflecting:
 Which method do you prefer – using a protractor or an angle ruler? Why?
