NTPS Math Plan Lesson Overview: Using an Angle Ruler Lesson Title: Using an Angle Ruler Quarter 3 Resource and Page Number: Shapes and Designs, Investigation 2, Lesson 2.3 NTPS Power Standard 5: Geometry - Attributes Sessions 1 day WA P.E. 5.3.B Foundational Key Concept(s) addressed: Geometric Sense: Characteristics of triangles and quadrilaterals Key Skill(s) addressed: Identify, sketch, and measure acute, right and obtuse angles (5.3.B) Language addressed: angle, acute angle, acute triangle, obtuse, right, degrees, equilateral triangle, line, line segment, vertex Crafting: The Launch section of the lesson in the Teacher’s Guide, p. 47, offers good opening questions to ask the students. Model estimating and then using the angle ruler to measure some of the angles of the shapes. Model both methods – aligning the rivet of the ruler over a vertex, and aligning both arms of the angle ruler with two sides of a shape. Composing: Have students work with a partner to measure angles of particular shapes. Students complete Problems A through D on page 34 and 35 in the Student Book. Reflecting: Which method do you prefer – using a protractor or an angle ruler? Why? What elements of this lesson are concrete? What elements of this lesson are representational? What elements of this lesson are abstract? Additional Notes: Use the same shapes from Lesson 1.1, Sorting Shapes, or the shapes from the Lines of Symmetry lesson.
