Data Communication, Protocols, etc. Network, such as Switches and Routers Client-‐Server, LAN (Local Area Network) OS (Windows Server 2008/2012, Windows 7/8) Virtualization, such as VMware, HyperV, etc. Industrial Control Systems (ICS), such as SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), DCS (Distributed Control System), PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), PAC (Programmable Automation Controller), etc. OPC, DAQ Embedded Systems, Real-‐Time Systems Industrial Software and Programming languages 1 Introduction In this project we should design and implement a system for handling all the laboratory equipment available at Telemark University College, Faculty of Technology (Figure 1-‐1). Figure 1-‐1. Laboratory System IA6209 – Industrial Data Communication and Network -‐ Project Work Laboratory System 2 The system may consists of the following parts: •

Database Barcode Reader System Web Management System Smartphone/Tablet App The system should to be distributed, i.e the Database and the different modules needs to be installed and running on different computers or devices in a network. The practical project work must be seen in context with the theory part that is covered in the course – both in the report and the presentation. 2 Network The different modules and software should be installed in a Network. The network should be created by you using Switch/Router, etc. The different Servers (Windows Server 2008/2012) and Clients (Windows 7/8) needed should be created using Virtualization, e.g., VMware. One of the Servers should be configured as Domain Controller with Active Directory (AD) and proper Groups and Users. The Clients (Windows 7/8) should be connected to the Domain. You should also install and configure the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) role on the same Windows Server, this means the clients will receive dynamic IP adresses from the server. Instead of setting up static IP addresses on the clients, they will receive dynamic IP addresses from the server. 3 Modules Below the requirements for the different modules are listed. 3.1 Database The Database needs to be “Microsoft SQL Server” (see Figure 3-‐1). The database should be running on a Windows Server (2008/2012) computer. The database should include tables for storing information about the different lab equipment, handling reservations and loans, etc. IA6209 – Industrial Data Communication and Network -‐ Project Work Laboratory System 3 Figure 3-‐1: SQL Server Use the tool called ERwin for the database modelling (ER diagram). A community edition may be downloaded for free 3.2 Barcode R eader S ystem A system for reading barcode availible on the lab equipment. Use LabVIEW or C#. An USB/serial Barcode skanner should be used, see Figure 3-‐2. We will use a Honeywell Eclipse MS5145 Single-‐Line Laser Scanner. Figure 3-‐2: Barcode Scanner IA6209 – Industrial Data Communication and Network -‐ Project Work Laboratory System 4 In addition a Label Writer (Figure 3-‐3) needs to be integrated for printing out barcode labels that can be attached to the different equipment. Figure 3-‐3: Label Writer We will use a Dyno LabelWriter 450. 3.3 Web M anagement S ystem The Web Management Systems should be a web based application that can be used to add new lab equipment to the system (Name, type, number, place, vendor, price, etc.) and handling reservations and loans. ASP.NET and C#/Visual Studio should be used. The Web Management System should be installed on a Window Server computer with Internet Information Server (IIS). 3.4 Smartphone/Tablet A pp The Smartphone App should handle loans and return of lab equipment to students and staff based on entering or reading the barcode number. Select either iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows 8.
