Why LEDs for
Lumastrobe Warning Light Products?
T
he use of light emitting diode (LED) technology in the warning light industry is a relatively new
phenomenon
This is primarily a result of the development of high intensity LEDs in recent years
Although their intensity is not yet comparable with halogen or xenon lamps their brightness can be
greatly enhanced by their use in clusters and in combination with optics
Pioneering new techniques by many
manufacturers for improving LED intensity continues as LEDs are rapidly becoming today’s illumination of
choice
And for good reason; in most applications they are less expensive and most maintenancefree lighting
source available today lasting up to hours

LED Construction Simply speaking the LED is not a
light bulb
It is a solid state semi
conductor that emits light when electric current is
passed through it
LEDs are made of one or more
atomic elements to make a special semiconductor
material
This material is usually made of different
combinations of silicon gallium aluminum and
arsenide injected with several impurities
This process
of injecting impurities into these pure elements is
called “doping”
The result of this process creates two
layers one with a positive charge (protons) and the
other with a negative charge (electrons)
When a
voltage is applied to the diode an interaction
between the proton and electron layers creates pho
tons which create light
LEDs are especially con
structed to release large numbers of photons
outward
LED are housed in a plastic enclosure that
concentrates the light in a particular direction
As you
can see in Figure most of the light bounces off the
sides of the bulb and projects on through the rounded end
Advantages of LEDs LEDs have several advantages over conventional lamps
For one thing they don’t have a
filament that will burn out so they last much longer (estimated at over hrs
)
reducing lamp replacement and costly maintenance
Additionally their small plastic bulb makes them a lot
more durable and their small size allows many of them to fit more easily into modern electronic circuits
LEDS
are not effected by vibration
In addition LED products are nonpyrotechnic so there are no dangerous flames
sparks or fumes
Their main advantage is efficiency
Since LEDs generate very little heat a much higher percentage of the elec
trical power is going directly to generating light
This factor is especially important with warning lights where
battery drain becomes an issue especially when a vehicle is stopped with the motor off
A typical () LED
warning light draw only Amps as compared to Amps for Joule strobes and Amps for halogen
rotating lights
Low power consumption leads to longer battery life

has been the generation of a family of portable batterypowered warning lights featuring a variety of mounting
options (magnetic handle bracket or bolt mounting)
Because of the low current drain of LEDs most of these
products will produce up to hours of continuous flashing light using only Dcell alkaline batteries

tilizing a standard Model BX Series warning light (see specifica
tions on Page ) a remote (wireless) controlled series has been
developed
With a remote controller (Key Fob) a set of selfpowered
traffic signals (one Red and one Green) can be quickly deployed for
temporary or emergency control of traffic
The operational range of the
remote is feet and the visibility of the light is feet in daylight and
conservatively / mile in darkness
The traffic signals are interconnected
with a foot electrical cable as standard
For safety and control purposes
the design permits only one color (either Red or Green) to be activated
when the button on the controller is pressed
The model number for traffic
signal set is RCBXTS
Two sets of this model could control the opposite
ends of oneway traffic situations from a middle location yielding a foot distance from each other
Since only one of the signals contain the
remote control receiver and active batteries the battery compartment of
the other signal could be used for spare batteries
If a spare battery is not
used in the second unit and the signal lights are to be used free standing the
battery compartment should be weighted down with sand or stone to give
it a low center of gravity and stability
