 All 3rd declension nouns end in an –is in

Indirect Statements (pg. 116)

While a direct statement is an exact
quotation of someone’s words,
perceptions, or thoughts, an indirect
statement indirectly reports these
thoughts or words.
Indirect Statements (pg. 116)

Indirect Statements are grammatical
constructions which are dependant clauses
and introduced by a cognitive verb (i.e. verbs
that you would do using your cognitive
senses [e.g. think, say, speak, see, etc.]).


E.g. – Catullus videt…
N.B- In English, we use the conjunction that
often to introduce indirect statements, this
subordinate clause. In Latin, there is no
conjunction to introduce and indirect
statement.
Indirect statements (pg. 116)

After the cognitive verb which introduces the
indirect statement, the subject in the indirect
statement will always be in the accusative case.
E.g. – Catullus videt passerem…
 N.B.- If the subject in the indirect statement is
the same subject as the one from the
introductory clause (independent clause), then
the Latin reflexive pronoun se is used as the
accusative subject in the indirect statement.
 E.g. – Puella narrat se…

Indirect Statements (pg. 116)
The verb in the indirect statement
changes to its infinitive form (however,
translate it like a regular verb). This
infinitive can either be active or passive
voice.
 E.g.- Catullus videt passerem esse
 E.g.- Puella narrat se … amare.

Indirect Statements (pg. 116)
All direct objects, predicate nominatives,
and predicate adjectives are all in the
accusative case in an indirect statement.
Usually, the accusative subject will be
before the direct object/predicate
nominative/predicate adjective.
 E.g.- Puella narrat se passerem amare.

Indirect Statements (pg. 116)

Catullus videt passerem esse semper in
gremio puellae.

Puella narrat se passerem amare.

Puella putat passerem esse mellitum.
