1. Sharia – “the way that leads to God” – The Islamic law code that
contains God’s laws as revealed in the Sunnah and Qur’an
2. Imam – a religious leader
3. minaret – a tower where a Muezzin (prayer caller) would call people
to pray from
4. polygamy – marriage to more than one spouse
5. Madrasa – a religious school where students learned subjects such as
law, philosophy, mathematics, and history
6. urban – having to do with a city or cities
7. Cordoba – the leading city in Muslim Spain
8. textiles – woven goods such as cotton cloth or wool
9. social mobility – the ability to rise in society
10.souk – a marketplace where merchants bought and sold goods from
around the empire
