Landforms
Archipelago- a group or chain of islands clustered
together in a sea or ocean
Atoll- a ring (or partial ring) of coral that forms an
island in an ocean or sea.
Butte- a flat-topped rock or hill formation with steep
sides
Canyon- a deep valley with very steep sides- often
carved from the Earth by a river.
Cave- a large hole in the ground or in the side of a
hill or mountain
Cliff- steep face of rock and soil
Cove- small, horse-shaped body of water along the
coast; the water is surrounded by land formed of soft
rock.
Desert- a very dry area
Dune- is a hill or ridge made of sand
Fjord- long, narrow sea inlet that is bordered by steep
cliffs
Glacier- slow moving river of ice
Hill- is a raiser area or mound of land
Island- piece of land that that is surrounded by water
Isthmus- is a narrow strip of land connecting two
larger landmasses. It has water on both sides.
Mesa- land formation with a flat area on top and
steep walls
Mountain- very tall, natural place on earth
Peninsula- body of land that is surrounded by water
on three sides
Plain- flat lands that have only small changes in
elevation
Plateau- large, flat area of land that is higher than the
surrounding land
Swamp- freshwater wetland that has spongy, muddy
land and a lot of water
Tundra- cold, treeless area
Valley- low place between mountains
Volcano- mountainous vent in the Earth’s crust
