Compulsory Courses: The eligibility requirements for graduation require students to complete the following
courses in grade 10: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Physical Education.
Students must also earn credits in grade 10 Geography and grade 9 Social Studies. We offer those courses
in alternate years. In 2016-17, all grade 9 and 10 students will be enrolled in Geography 20
Students will be placed in the following courses:

Mathematics
Students in grade 10 must select the Mathematics course they wish to take. Questions about the most
appropriate selection for any particular student should be directed to the current Math teacher. Visit the
FAQ section of the website for an overview of the different Math courses.

Options
Student will be able to select from a variety of optional courses. Students will select most of these options in
the fall but need to make some choices now. Please note that some options are taught at Arborg. These
are marked with (A).

Band / Choir/ Vocal and Instrumental Jazz Program:
Students can earn extra credits by enrolling in Band, Choir, and/or Vocal Jazz.
This is being offered on a co-scheduled basis (pull out). Additional time has been scheduled in ELA and
Math to offset the time students need to be out of class to attend Band and Choral. Students may earn up to
three elective band/choir and or vocal jazz credits.

Course Descriptions:
Essential Math 20F: This course develops math skills, ideas, and confidence that will enable
students to continue studying math in the future. Students will use many of the skills that they
already have learned to solve problems and do basic arithmetic operations. There are four main
areas that will be explored in this course: personal finance, shapes and space, numbers and
decision making. Problem solving, communication, reasoning, and mental math are some of the
themes you will discover in each module.
Exercise Science: This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors,
and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical
activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors
that influence an individual’s participation in physical activity. The course provides students with an
introduction to topics such as kinesiology, recreation, and sports administration.
Family Studies: The purpose of this course is threefold:



To help you understand yourself and your family situations
To help you appreciate the variety and diversity among families today
To make you more conscious of the personal decisions you must
throughout your life and of the societal influences that affect those decisions
make
Many people re-examine their decisions about family throughout the course of the lives, continually
reassessing and re-evaluating their relationships. The best way to make decisions about our
personal lives is to make ourselves aware of the facts and statistics of family life issues. This course
is intended to educate students on the many alternatives available in life.
French 10 / 20: These courses aim to help students communicate in the French language and to
appreciate francophone cultures. The goals of the courses are to give students the opportunity to:




acquire the necessary language skills to communicate in French;
value the learning of French as a tool for personal, intellectual, and social growth;
demonstrate an appreciation of Francophone cultures;
develop intercultural communication skills that are essential to all global citizens.
Pre-Cal / Applied Math 20: This course is a continuation of concepts that have been studied in
Grade 9 mathematics, and introduces new topics. It is the foundation for both applied and precalculus mathematics courses at the Grade 11 and 12 levels. There are four main areas that will
be covered in this course: Numbers, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and
Probability. Problem solving, communication, reasoning, and mental math are some of the themes
that are explored in each module.
