King Philip Came Over For Great Spaghetti Kingdom - All living organisms are first placed into different kingdoms. Phylum - The animal kingdom is divided into 40 smaller groups, known as phylum. Here, animals are grouped by their main features. Class - The phylum group is then divided into even smaller groups, known as classes. Order - Each class is divided into small groups again, known as orders. Family - In every order, there are different families of animals which all have very similar features. Genus - Every animal family is then divided into small groups known as genus. Each genus contains animals that have very similar features and are closely related. Species - Each individual species within the genus is named after its individual features and characteristics. Example 1 - Tiger Kingdom: Animalia (Animal) Phylum: Chordata (Vertebrate) Class: Mammalia (Mammal) Order: Carnivora (Carnivore) Family: Felidae (Cat) Genus: Panthera Species: Panthera tigris (Tiger) Six Kingdoms Animals – many celled, reproduce by live birth or eggs, feed on other organisms Plants –many celled, no structures for moving from place to place, make their own food, reproduce by seeds or spores Fungi – many- celled (some one-celled), most don’t have structures, absorb food from other living things Protists – most one-celled, can make their own food or feed on other organisms, some have structures for moving place to place Bacteria – simple cells, some make their own food and some feed on other living things Archea – some have structures for moving from place to place
