• A web host provides you with
the tools, space and support
to create your web pages and
email accounts
• Hosting is the backbone of
any website
• It's where you go to build,
maintain, and publish your
web pages

– www.lions.odu.edu
• Outside hosts
– www.freewebs.com
– www.geocities.com
– and many more.
• Set up your own web server
e.g.: you can download Apache
– Buy your own server machine
– Get your IP address
Advantages/Disadvantages –
ODU Web Hosting
• Advantages:
- Free accounts for ODU students
and faculty.
- Easy access.
- Freedom of Creativity.
• Disadvantages:
- Limited space
- Account expires.
- Required CS course
- Account expires after graduation.
Step2: Creating a Domain Name
• Choosing a proper
domain name
– Make it short
– Be search-engine friendly
– Don’t use the words that
sound the same but have
different spellings ( for
example the word to ( totwo-too and 2)
– Avoid numbers and capital
letters

• Transfer your files from
your computer onto your
hosting. Such as( images,
media, etc)
• Use FTP to transfer your
files.
Step 5 : Submiting Your Website
to a Search Engine
• Over 50% of all Internet
traffic goes through
search engines.
• To list your website on
search engines:
- Use the right keywords.
- Have a good content
