Activities Structure: Relating Weather to Global Classrooms
Global Classrooms: Global classrooms are activities where two or more classrooms study
the same topic together. Real time chat environments and video conferencing support this
type of activity quite well. Global classrooms differ from keypals in that global classroom
activities are most often accomplished through group-to-group communication rather
than individual-to-individual communication. This makes the management of global
classroom activities less taxing for the instructor.
I would incorporate Global Classrooms into my classroom by having my students
communicate through email or skype with another classroom from a different region of
the world or country. During this communication both classes with be learning about
typical weather in their region. The students will be placed in groups and they will be
given the opportunity to ask the students from the other classroom questions about typical
weather in their area. The students may learn that weather in their area may be
completely different in another region of the world. Each day the students will also track
precipitation, temperature, clouds, and weather and they will compare their data with the
other classroom. Then they would compare and contrast the weather from the different
areas and predict what season is currently in that area based on their data analysis. This
will promote global communication skills and with also enhance their knowledge of
weather events around the world.
