(However, please be aware that these business foundations options are not available for MBAs or any other EMU graduate program, so if you switch graduate programs, you might need to take additional course work.) Winter 2016 MSHROD Newsletter Page 4 of 20 The MSHROD requires nine undergraduate or graduate credit hours (typically three courses) of business foundation courses spread across three business functional areas (Marketing, Law, Economics, Accounting, Finance); three credit hours must be in Accounting or Finance. This applies to students that did not have these courses as part of their undergraduate programs of study. Students can take regular credit classes at the graduate or undergraduate level at EMU or at a community college. However, there are several EMU noncredit professional development courses that will satisfy MSHROD business foundation requirements. These courses are "noncredit" and would n ot be eligible for financial aid funding, etc. You register for these courses through emich.edu/training/HR. You must pay for the course when you register. All of these courses are $550 including any materials. The courses are pass/fail, and at the end you should provide your graduate advisor with a copy of your certificate of completion for the course. Bobby Curry is working with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Jackson to create a program to train the members of the recently launched Family Support Committee to work effectively to ensure that new homeowners are well equipped to be successful homeowners. Georgia Donnelly is creating five new job position descriptions, each complete with compensation and benefit information for Digital Inclusion, an Ypsilanti nonprofit organization that provides computer hardware and training for lowincome and atrisk youth of Washtenaw County. Lauryn Dotson is working with Jervis B. Webb, a company that designs and manufactures material handling systems, to revise its onboarding process for new hires’ activities during the first six months of employment . Michelle Durante is working with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw Country to develop a customized performance management system with collaborative goal setting, feedback sessions and a performance evaluation system. Taylor Garner is creating job descriptions for MEP Services, a third party HR provider for charter schools in the state of Michigan. Traci Gehringer is creating a training resource website for the leadership team of a midsized bank and a training program on how to fully utilize the website. The website will include: supervisory documents, job aids, on demand training, and training Kathryn Greenwell is developing and facilitating project management training for Brosnan Builders, LLC, a local residential and commercial construction company. Michael Haynes will be consulting with Eric Ward from Student Judicial Services (EMU) and will develop a training session as part of his Appeals Board member training program. Roxanne Hill is preparing a final consulting report with employee engagement best practices and recommendations to reduce turnover and improve communication at a global supplier of automotive brake systems and components. Caroline Hinson is evaluating the talent acquisition program of a local engineering firm by benchmarking talent acquisition programs of similar companies as well as identifying opportunities for innovation, return on investment, improved productivity, cost reductions and an increase in the overall effectiveness of their program. Vanessa Liddell is conducting a job analysis and an onboarding process for an international car importing company to increase managers’ overall ability to supervise contractual employees, promote excellent customer service, and foster betterquality collaborations between managers and contractual employees. Katlin Niesen is creating interviewer guides for an administrative specialist and a General Manager for the Director of the University of Michigan Golf courses in Ann Arbor. Julie Ostrowski is working with GoTo Transport. After selecting a platform she will work with them to develop their first two training courses and provide detailed instructions and templates so they can create their own courses in the future. Crystal Poertner is doing an employee retention analysis for Martinrea Industries. Aimee Schroeter is working with a Call Center in Ann Arbor to improve job descriptions and will develop a survey to improve recruiting applicants. Tantaneice Scott is developing a facilitator guide that will describe the process of selecting employees and conducting employee focus groups on employee engagement for a nonprofit behavioral organization. Morhaf Sukkar will offer structure and guidance to an Internal Medicine specialty at Shores Clinic in Roseville, Michigan. The goal of the project is to find out why the office is not making enough net profit and why in some quarters the gross profit does not cover the overhead costs. Brandi Snipes’ project includes the creation of an Employee Handbook for Perfecting Church, located in Detroit, Michigan. The Handbook will include policies and procedures with applicable State and Federal Laws, in addition to general work related guidelines that coincide with a religious work environment as they continue to grow and evolve both as a ministry and a place of employment. Susan Stackpole is working with Kaydon Corporation, a division of SKF, to conduct a paid time off analysis between Kaydon locations and industry best practices and to develop a consulting report with recommendations for the organization. Lisa Vaughan is working with the Workforce Intelligence Network (WIN), a nonprofit located in SE Michigan, to create a digital employee handbook/standard operating procedure guide and a consulting report with recommendations for introducing the employee handbook during the onboarding process and keeping the handbook up to date. Winter 2016 MSHROD Newsletter Page 13 of 20 Jessica Zonder will be working with Chabad in the D, an upandcoming nonprofit organization based in Detroit. Through interviews with the staff and industry benchmarking, she will create job descriptions and salary scales for the current positions, as well as for a future Chief Operations Officer. She will then create a hiring plan for the COO position, which will include recruiting, selection and retention strategies. Dr. Jean BushBacelis had her paper, “Country expert: Global business communication,” accepted for publication in the 2016 edition of Business & Professional Communication Quarterly . Dr. BushBacelis was also awarded the Management Department Teaching Award for 201516. Dr. Kunal Banerji was awarded the Management Department Service Award for 201516. Dr. Chris Day consulted on Sage textbook development for Organizational Behavior: A Critical Thinking Approach by Neck, Houghton and Murray. She has also taught the SHRM recertification course, “Working Collaboratively Across Functions,” as well as an accountability workshop and employee satisfaction consulting for Washtenaw County employers. Dr. Day also provided mentoring and HR strategy guidance for a SE Michigan horticultural firm and continued executive coaching, as well as mentoring for a nonprofit organization. Dr. Megan Endres was awarded the Management Department Research Award for 201516. Dr. Stephanie Newell , Dr. Kunal Banerji and Dr. Alankrita Pandey had their paper, “Tata Motors Acquisition of the Jaguar Land Rover Group: The Colonized Strike Back,” th accepted for the 12 International Conference on Organizational Discourse in August 2016. Dr. Anushri Rawat, Dr. Linda Isenhour and Dr. Jean McEnery presented their inprogress research, "HRM Career Success Model Development” at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines in Orlando, FL in January, 2016. Dr. Rawat was also recognized for serving as faculty mentor for student Elissa Davis’s Undergraduate Symposium paper, “Work Values, Personalities and Work Attitudes of Millennials.” Winter 2016 MSHROD Newsletter Page 14 of 20 Professor Jane Stephenson was recognized for serving as faculty mentor for students Justin Snyder and Marco Macias’ Undergraduate Symposium paper, “A Comparative Analysis of Two Pizza Industry Giants: Domino’s Pizza and Little Caesar’s.” Dr. Stewart Tubbs received a “Most Valuable Professor Award” from the Athletic Department during halftime of an EMU basketball game. This is the second time Dr. Tubbs has been chosen by student athletes for this honor. Dr. Denise Tanguay received a “Most Valuable Professor Award” from the Athletic Department during halftime of an EMU basketball game. She was chosen by student athletes for this honor. Dr. Tanguay was also recognized for serving as faculty mentor for student Matthew Leddy’s Undergraduate Symposium paper, “Family Business Succession: A Case Study Analysis of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry Company.” Dr. Fraya WagnerMarsh was notified that our MSHROD and Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management Programs were recognized as Top 10 winners for the LEAD2016 Leadership Excellence Award. This year, the ranking process and award categories were streamlined and updated to better define the leadership efforts nominated. Two of Eastern Michigan University’s graduate programs in Human Resources received Top 10 Awards. The Master of Science in Human Resources and Organizational Development won a Top Ten in Master’s Programs with Emphasis in Human Resources. FROM THE COEDITORS: Many MSHROD students are seeking learning experiences through internships. We appreciate Ernie’s willingness to share his experiences with you and hope that this encourages everyone to consider such opportunities. Opportunities come when you least expect them! My internship with Kestly Development, working under Mike Kestly, began in just that way as I networked at the annual College of Business Alumni Conference. Kestly Development is a 16yearold Organizational Development and Human Resource information, assessment and training company. Kestly Development helps organizations increase retention of key people, prepare succession plans, enhance engagement, improve customer service, increase sales and help managers develop their skills. Winter 2016 MSHROD Newsletter Page 17 of 20 In the past 18 months, my work with Mr. Kestly has been a neverending learning adventure. My very first work experience involved attending the annual MiSHRM Conference as an exhibitor. Running a booth and networking with fellow HR professionals who worked in various fields helped to clarify the direction I wanted to pursue within the MSHROD program. Active job shadowing opportunities with Kestly Development clients allowed for firsthand experience in examining, interpreting and applying assessment tools while searching for the best job candidates for varyious positions. Previously I had envisioned a traditional focus of HR and the administrative work that accompanies it. Yet through interactions with several professional consultants, I have reimagined my future career path to find a direction that may better fit my interests. I believe that my internship was unique. Kestly Development sponsors and works with two educational workshops in Washtenaw County: Executive Briefings and the Leadership A2Y 2.0. Executive Briefings take place on a bimonthly basis, covering a wide range of topics from succession planning to retaining millennials. Leadership 2.0, run by the Chamber of Commerce, conducts assessments and brings in successful professionals to discuss topics such as Crisis and Change Management. Even with minimal professional experience, I was able to participate in each of these lectures based on my MSHROD program coursework. During one lecture on job descriptions, for example, I applied the fundamentals of job analysis from Staffing taught by Dr. Camp, leading to constructive and productive breakout sessions in the leadership program. These lectures also covered topics that have been relevant to core class requirements in the MSHROD program. Sometimes a different perspective is necessary to fully understand course material; having the opportunity to apply what I learned in class through this internship strengthened that understanding. Training and development of employees is something that I have identified as my passion through these internship experiences. My internship with Mike Kestly has helped to solidify my career goals and expanded my own interests within the MSHROD program. Through the experience gained from my internship, I was able to select electives that would benefit my future career options. If not for this symbiotic relationship between my education and internship, I would not have refined my aspirations to those that I have today. It has been a lifechanging experience that I will always treasure.
