(FPHNY) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. FPHNY partners with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to raise public and private sector funding to implement programs that address pressing public health needs and that stand to benefit from private sector partnership in the rapid implementation of such projects. POSITION OVERVIEW The Bureau of Environmental Surveillance and Policy (BESP) within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is a multidisciplinary team of public health scientists that conducts environmental health surveillance, research and program analysis that inform policies and services to improve public health. The research fellow will work as part of the air quality, climate, and health unit as part of a team of researchers in a NYSERDA-funded study of the health impacts of weather-related power outages, and the relationship between climate change and food safety violations and foodborne illnesses. The research fellow will join an established Climate and Health Program at DOHMH that conducts surveillance, research and health impact assessment and works across city agencies to develop programmatic and policy responses to climate change. The researcher will contribute to study design, implementation, analyses, and report development. The researcher will also work with the climate and health team in in sharing results with key stakeholders and assessing strategies to prepare for the health effects of climate change. NYC DOHMH BESP is seeking an environmental health research fellow in collaboration with The Fund for Public Health in New York (FPHNY), a not for profit corporation serving as program partner with DOHMH to implement and advance public health initiatives. This position is funded through a NYSERDA grant for two years, subject to availability of annual renewals. DUTIES Conduct epidemiologic analyses of health and linked environmental data including hospital discharges, mortality, survey data, power outages, property characteristics, and neighborhood demographics. Contribute to design and manage implementation of surveys and focus groups. Develop and contribute to presentations and manuscripts for scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Assist in preparation of grant reports, and prepare and track Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, renewals, and related data use agreements. Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION 1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of environmental health science or geographic information science or geostatistics; Or 2. A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of environmental epidemiology, environmental health science or geographic information science or geostatistics and three years of full-time relevant experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year of full-time experience in a research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or EXPERIENCE and SKILLS Interested applicants should possess the following: • Extensive training in environmental epidemiology, geographic information science, or biostatistics. • Working experience in the use of ArcGIS and either SAS or R. • Ability to synthesize and apply methods from the relevant published research. • Experience in the design, management and analysis of environmental and health databases. • Excellent writing, speaking ability and strong interpersonal communication skills. • Experience in climate and health effects research is a plus SALARY AND BENEFITS: FPHNY offers a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000, dependent upon experience and salary history.
