The Northeast Region can be subdivided into two smaller cultural
regions. What are these regions called? What states are in these
regions?
New England Region – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont
Mid-Atlantic Region - Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York,
Pennsylvania

What are the natural features and climate of the Northeast Region?
The region includes part of the Appalachian Mountains and the
Atlantic coast line. The land is not very flat or fertile so farming is
not a major industry. This area has Vermont and New Hampshire’s
mountains, Pennsylvania’s rolling hills, and New York’s lakes, pond, and
forests. Also, there are Massachusetts’s marshes and sand dunes
along with Maine’s rocky coastlines.
The entire area is moderately rainy. Winters have heavy snow and
freezing rain while summers are sunny and relatively warm.

Who settled the Northeast Region?
The earliest settlers were English Protestants who came from Europe
for religious freedom. As some of the original New England settlers
migrated westward, immigrants from Canada, Ireland, Italy, and
Eastern Europe moved into the region.
The Middle Atlantic was settled by many Nationalities. The lower
Hudson River Valley (now New York) was settled by Dutch. Swedes
settled Delaware, English Catholics settled Maryland, and the friends
(Quakers) settled Pennsylvania.

What customs or beliefs are distinct to the Northeast Region?
The New England Region is known for its traditional buildings. There
are simple, wood-framed houses and churches with large white
steeples. Traditional lighthouses can be found along the Atlantic
coastline. The New England Region is also known for its Town Hall
Meetings in which citizens gather to discuss issues of the day. It
originated from meetings held by church elders in earlier days.
New Englanders have a reputation for hard work, shrewdness, thrift,
and ingenuity in business dealings.

What type of industry is in the Northeast Region?
The New England and Middle Atlantic Region are both know for
manufacturing and shipping. The Middle Atlantic is also known for
finance, communications, and pharmaceuticals.

What art is distinct to the Northeast Region?
In the New England region, Contra dancing and square dancing is done
to live Irish, Acadian, or other folk music.
The New England Region is known for American classical music.
Boston is the site of the New England Conservatory and the renowned
Boston Symphony Orchestra.
The New England Region has produced rock bands like Aerosmith,
Phish, the Pixies, and Boston.

There are many possible answers for this question!
The top-ranking educational universities and colleges are in New
England (Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Smith, Williams,
Amherst, and Wesleyan).
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was home to the Continental Congress.
These delegates from the original colonies organized the American
Revolution. This city is also where the Declaration of Independence
and the U.S. Constitution were written.
