Class Notes Date: 11.3 – APPLICATIONS OF RIGHT TRIANGLE TRIGONOMETRY Angle of Elevation: formed by the line of sight (looking up) and a horizontal line (looking straight ahead) line of sight angle of elevation An angle of elevation is the angle formed by a horizontal line and a line of sight to a point above the line. horizontal Angle of Depression: formed by the line of sight (looking down) and a horizontal line (looking straight ahead) horizontal angle of depression line of sight An angle of depression is the angle formed by a horizontal line and a line of sight to a point below the line. EXAMPLES 1) Describe 1 and 2 as they relate to the objects in the diagram. 2 1 Page 1 Class Notes Date: 2) A person two meters tall stands 5 meters from a building. The angle of elevation from where the person stands to the top of the building is 75°. Find the height of the building to the nearest whole number. 3) The pilot of an airplane finds an angle of depression of an airport to be 16°. If the altitude of the plane is 6000 meters, find the horizontal distance to the airport. 4) The angle of depression from the plane to the tower is 25°, and the plane is 1000 feet above the tower. What is the horizontal distance from the plane to the tower? 5) The angle of depression is 15 degrees and the horizontal distance from the plane to the tower is 5200 feet. How high above the tower is the plane? Remember – The angle of elevation or depression is an angle between a line of sight and the HORIZONTAL. Do not use the vertical!!! Page 2
