Remembering Dr. C.F.A. Moorrees on
his third death anniversary
It is now exactly three years that, I am remembering one of the
greatest pioneers in the field of Orthodontics; and he is none
other than Dr. Coenraad F.A . Moorrees, Chief of the
Orthodontic Department at the Forsyth Dental Centre in Boston
from 1948 to 1989, who passed away and left for his heavenly
abode on October 28 th 2003, after a brief illness.
I have always felt Dr. Moorrees as one of my Gurus, even though
I have never met him and there was so much of a geographical
distance between the two of us. His life was a remarkable one,
as can be observed from the following writing about him. His
numerous contributions to the knowledge of Orthodontics
are well known; and one of them is "The Aleut Dentition, a
correlative study of dental characteristics in the Eskimoid
people" published by the Harvard University Press in 1957.
In 1953, the well known Moorrees mesh-diagram
cephalometric analysis was introduced. This study was based
on cephalograms of 50 Forsyth Dental Hygiene students. He
and Martin Kean validated "natural head position" as the key
for cephalometric analysis.
The Moorrees received numerous honours for his basic
research to the understanding of the growth and nature of
human dentition and face. The University of Utrecht conferred
on him the degree of Dr. Med. Honoris causa in 1971 and in
1977 he received the Albert H . Ketchem memorial award from
American Association of Orthodontists, for his "outstanding
contribution in the advancement of science of Orthodontics".
Dr. Coenraad Frans August Moorrees was born in Hague, the
Netherlands on October 23,d 1916. When young, he was a
capable magician and his other hobby with roots in Holland
was his love and knowledge of flowers.
The war experiences of Dr. Moorrees reveal his extraordinary
determination and ability to focus qualities of character that
helped him to achieve great heights in his further academic
years. It is likely that the survival tests when he was his twenties
steeled him in his later life as the Chief and Professor of the
Department of Orthodontics.
He appeared some times as a severe task master to his post
doctoral fellows in Orthodontics; a clinical speciality that
indeed demand much task mastery.
Chairman], Dr. Rahul Baldawa and Dr. Abdul Diami . The event
was made possible with the kind co-operation of the
management committee member of Pravara institute of Medical
Sciences. The students had personal interaction with all the
speakers on various current topics.
All participants, speakers and Chief Guest had an opportunity
to visit " Shri Saibaba Temple" at shirdi and attend the holy arti.
They expressed their gratitude towards the organizing
committee for such a wonderful and unforgettable event.
Dr. Coenraad F.A. Moorrees was a co-editor along with Dr.
Frans P.G.M. Van der Linden, Professor and Chairman Dept.
of Orthodontics, University of Nymegen, the Netherlands, of
a book titled "Orthodontics: Evaluation and Future".
These were the proceedings of the International Conference
on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Orthodontic
department of University of Nymegen, The Netherlands, in
October 1987.
This Volume contains very valuable contributions of 30
internationally known researchers and clinicians. Some ofthem
are: Rolf Frankel, William Proffit, Richard Riedel and many
more outstanding chairmen of the Orthodontic Department.
The topics that were discussed were decision making,
treatment, need and reality, growth and surgery in major
abnormalities, functional aspects of treatment, laterogeni c
effects of Orthodontics, variations in results, limitations and
long term effects and stability of Orthodontic results.
On my request and on Dr. Moorrees' recommendation, Dr.
Van der Lindon had sent me a copy of this book as a personal
gift. I very much cherish this kind gesture of this great
orthodontic personality and a kind human being, who
constantly th rived for the betterment of denti stry' s fi rst speci al ity
called "orthodontics".
I am sure all those who are connected with the research and
betterment of Orthodontics will long cherish the memory of
Dr. C.F.A. Moorrees.
He was 87 years of age when he left this world. He is survived
by his wife, a son, a daughter and a grand daughter.
I feel the world of Orthodontics has lost a father figure. I pray
that may the Almighty rest his soul in peace and give strength
to his near and dear ones to bear the personal loss.
M. R. Joshi, M.D.S. (Orthodontics)
Earlier, Prof. and Head, Department of Orthodontics,
Government Dental College and Hospital, Ahmedabad.
The biographical accou nt of Dr. C.F.A. Moorrees has been written by me a nd is
al most based o n the paper written by Dr. Sheldon Peck and Dr. Leslie Will, Boston,
Mass, USA and the title is "In memoriam - Coenraad F.A. Moorrees 1916-2003",
published in American J. Orthod. Dentofacial Orthopedics, March 2004, 125:396398. I have also added my personal remembrances of Dr. Moorrees.
