MOTRONIC SELF-DIAGNOSIS Using button 3 near the control unit, the operator can receive information about the type of malfunction which has occurred, following the procedure listed below and watching the "Check Engine" lights: 1 -- Turn the ignition key to run. 2 -- Press button 3 for 2.5 to 5 sec. 3 -- After a pause of 0.5 sec. and a cycle of 2.5 sec. ON and 2.5 sec. OFF, the first information block is displayed. It is supplied in short flashes of 0.5 sec. On and 0.5 sec. OFF, the number of flashes most be noted and represents the first of the four (4) numbers in the error code. At the end of the first block of information there will be a pause of 2.5 sec. (light off), followed by the second block and the third and fourth in the same way. Each flash code starts with the sequence ON and OFF and finishes with a pause of 2.5 sec. The code 4444 indicates that no errors have been detected. The button is pressed again for 2.5 to 5 sec. to move on to investigate any subsequent error. At the end of display of the last error a series of flashes of 2.5 sec. occurs to indicate that all the errors have been displayed. Now press the button for 1O sec, in order to erase the error memory. The chart below shows all the flash codes relating to the types of errors which can be picked up. Remember that some errors do not cause the illumination of the "check engine' warning light when the car is in use, but are stored In the control unit; the flash code of these errors can therefor only be picked up during the self-diagnosis procedure.
