Adding and Subtracting Decimals Guided Notes

When adding and subtracting decimals, the key is to line up the ______________ _______________!

Once you have lined up the decimal points, add _____________ to any blank spots, then add or
subtract like you normally would.

Let’s practice with the following problem  3.035 + 12.29.
In the box, line these numbers up with the decimal points and
add in zeros to the missing spots.

Now, practice with the following subtraction problem  5.326 – 1.84
Multiplying Decimals Guided Notes

The key to multiplying decimals is to make sure to line up the __________________ on the right, not
the _________________________! In fact, ______________________the decimal points completely!
Let’s practice with 7.19 × 8.4

To multiply decimals, first rewrite the problem, ignoring the decimal points: 719 × 84. Now, solve this
in the box, ignoring the decimal points 

Finally, starting at the end of the answer, move the
decimal point of the solution to the left the same
number of decimal places that were in the
original factors (see below for clarification).

In this case, 7.19 has 2 decimal place values, and 8.4 has
1 decimal place value, for a total of 3 decimal places.

So, move the decimal point of the solution 3 places to
the left. Therefore, the solution is ________________.

Now, try this one in the box to the right  1.93 x 5.7
Long Division Review Guided Notes
(You must know these steps so you can divide with decimals tomorrow!)
First, you need to remember the three parts of a division problem: dividend, divisor, and quotient.
_____________________
÷ ________________________ = _____________________
Then, you need to know which number goes on the outside of the division sign, and which goes on the inside.
Write them in below:
Now, use this mnemonic device to help you remember the 4 steps.
Mnemonic device:
What it stands for:
Does
McDonald’s
Serve
Burgers?
Use this space below to solve a few practice problems along with the class:
1. 2535 ÷ 3
2. 19351 ÷ 37
Decimal Division Guided Notes
To divide with decimals there are a few extra steps you must do before you start doing long
division. They are not hard, but you must slow down and do them all!
Step 1: Make sure the dividend (first number) is on the ________________ of the division sign,
and the divisor (second number) is on the _________________ of the division sign.
Step 2: If the outside number (divisor) is a decimal, move the ________________
_______________ over until it is at the end of the number, right next to the division sign (think
of the hockey metaphor!)
IMPORTANT: If the outside number isn’t a decimal, skip to step 4.
Step 3: However many spaces you moved the decimal in step 2, move the decimal point of the
inside number (dividend) that __________________ number of places.
Step 4: Bring the decimal point of the inside number (dividend) straight _____________ up
into the answer.
Step 5: Do regular long division.
Use this space below to solve a few practice problems along with the class:
1. 222.3 ÷ 0.3
2. 42.019 ÷ 0.89
