CHAPTER TWO
GEOMETRY GLOSSARY
Alternate Interior Angles
The nonadjacent angles within two lines being
intersected by a transversal, on opposite sides
of the transversal.
Alternate Interior Angles Conjecture, or
AIA Conjecture
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal,
then alternate interior angles are congruent.
Alternate Exterior Angles
The nonadjacent angles outside two lines being
intersected by a transversal, on opposite sides
of the transversal.
Alternate Exterior Angles Conjecture, or
AEA Conjecture
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal,
then alternate exterior angles are congruent.
Conjecture
The generalization found after using inductive
reasoning
Converse of Parallel Lines Conjecture
If two lines are cut by a transversal to form
pairs of congruent corresponding angles,
congruent alternate interior angles, or congruent
alternate exterior angles, then the lines are
parallel.
Corresponding Angles
Angles that occur in the same relative position
in each group of four angles created when a
transversal intersects two line.
Corresponding Angles Conjecture, or CA
conjecture
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal,
then corresponding angles are congruent.
Deductive Reasoning
The process of showing that certain statements
follow logically from agreed-upon assumptions
and proven facts.
Function Rule
The rule that gives the nth term for a sequence.
Inductive Reasoning
The process of observing data, recognizing
patterns, and making generalizations about
those patterns.
Linear Pair Conjecture
If two angles form a linear pair, then the
measures of the angles add up to 180 degrees.
Mathematical Model
A representation of a real-world situation.
Mathematical models are sometimes called
representations.
Parallel Lines Conjecture
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal,

then corresponding angles are congruent,
alternate interior angles are congruent, and
alternate exterior angles are congruent.
Slope
A measurement of a line's steepness. To
calculate slope, you find the ratio of the vertical
distance to the horizontal distance. "Rise over
Run"
Transversal
A line intersecting two or more other lines in
the plane.
Vertical Angles Conjecture
If two angles are vertical angles, then they have
equal measures (are congruent)
