COURSE INFORMATION: 1. Catalog Description: Introductory course designed to provide a Foundation for future courses in nursing. The nursing process is used as a framework to develop scientific understanding and basic skills necessary to meet the basic biopsychosocial needs of patients through the lifespan. Five credits theory, three credits clinical. Offered Fall Semester only. 2. THEORY EVALUATION: Evaluation of student progress will be the successful completion of the course outcomes which will be evaluated with nine (9) module examinations, a comprehensive final exam, and a Library/Research assignment, and daily quizzes and/or assignments. Questions contained in all exams will be based on application of knowledge acquired in this, as well as previous courses. Questions may be multiple-choice, fill in the blank, multiple-answer, or other NCLEX® alternate formats as applicable. All written work (theory and clinical) will be considered for determination of a course grade. CLINICAL EVALUATION: All required skill demonstrations must be completed satisfactorily in the nursing lab prior to clinical performance. Clinical performance is evaluated mutually by student and instructor at mid-semester and the end of the semester. Clinical performance and written clinical assignments (see list below) will be used to determine clinical competency and the ability to generalize and transfer theory outcomes to the clinical settings. A grade in clinical performance is considered in regard to continuing in the course and to pass the course. Late theory and clinical assignments will be worth 50% of the actual grade. If an assignment is more than one week late, a zero will be given for the assignment but submission of the assignment is still required. The difference between these three modules is the mathematical process that is used to determine correct dosages. Each student should do a quick review of each modality to determine which mathematical process is easiest for them to understand, then complete the module that focuses on that modality. The first four parts of the module (Safe Dosage, Medication Administration, Oral Medications, and Injectable Medications) must be completed by November 30, 2012.
