SYLLABUS Dramatic Arts: Advanced Acting Class At the end of this course, you will: Analyzing and constructing meaning from theatrical experiences, dramatic literature, and electronic media – in depth incorporation of all media types and how to create strong performances. a. Examines various theories of dramatic structure from Aristotle to present b. Uses standards of literary dramatic analysis to study theatrical production c. Constructs arguments that relate the theme/s of a theatre production to the enhancement of the human experience Developing scripts through improvisation and other theatrical methods a. Produces scripts based on personal experiences, heritage, imagination, literature, and history b. Connects appropriate form and structure to script creation c. Applies standard theatrical conventions to producing scripts d. Critiques and uses historical, textual, and improvisational studies Acting by developing, communicating, and sustaining roles within a variety of situations and environments a. Examines the skills and tasks associated with acting on stage b. Explores the development of an actor's skills and resources c. Creates characters using the tools and resources of acting to a variety of formal and informal performances d. Analyzes and applies observation skills for character creation Designing and executing artistic and technical elements of theatre a. Engages in script analysis from the perspective of technical theatre collaborators b. Plans and creates technical elements of a theatrical production c. Collaborates with other members of a creative team to create and execute formal and informal theatrical performances Directing by conceptualizing, organizing, and conducting rehearsals for performance a. Examines the structure of the rehearsal process b. Creates a prompt script with blocking notation for a 2-3 character scene c. Develops a rehearsal schedule to prepare a scene for performance d. Collaborates on formal and information theatrical performances Researching cultural and historical information to support artistic choices a. Explores the relationship between research and theatrical production b. Engages in meaningful cultural and historical research to support formal or informal theatrical performance c. Either: One Show, not including the one you will be performing in, must be attended during the year. Either: October 21 at 7:00 or 22 at 3:00 and 7:00 – One Act November 3 and 4 at 7:00 One Act – Straight Show January 20 and 21st at 7:00 - Theater for Young Audiences Play February 17 and 18 at 7:00 – Theater for Young Audiences Musical February 24 and 25 at 7:00 – Advanced Acting Student Directed One Acts/Short Plays March 9 and 10 at 7:00 and March 11 at 3:00 and 7:00 – Shuler Show April 28 and 29 at 7:00 – Junior Musical You will either perform or direct a student directed one act or short play. These will be performed on the same night both nights in a series. If interested in directing, please speak with Mrs. Tanner. Your performance weekend is: February 24 and 25st. Your class will perform on one of those two nights. TBA which night is yours. The week prior will be tech week with rehearsals from 4:00-6:00. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES General Rules: * Don’t be tardy to theater class! It’s the best part of the day! * BE KIND to one another. Critiques should always start off with a positive and end with a positive. * In order to create art and community, you must LOOK AWAY FROM THE PHONE. You will not learn and grow if you are constantly on your cell phone. There will be a log that Mrs. Tanenr notates overly abused self phone usage. Seven or more notations and a parent will be contacted, because that is almost the equivilent of missing a week of class. * Participate in activities. Come rehearsed and ready to create. * Encouragement and smiling and caring is a great way to help yourself and everyone around you grow. Grading Policies: Most assignments in this class are graded using a rubric. You will receive a copy of the rebric as well as one being abailable to you in It’s Learning. Midterms and Finals will be performance based and then have a written componant. The written component will only need to be done, IF you HAVE to take the midtern and/or final for the class. There will be a growth measurement test at the beginning and end of the course. The first test does not count toward your grade, while the last test counts as a classroom activity grade. SCENE DAY gets a grade every other week. So, Mrs. Tanner takes the BEST scene day performance between the two weeks and grades it.
