Networking is the interconnection of two or more computers for resource
sharing. It can be categorized according to size of network, speed of data
transmission, distance covered, technology used etc. on the basis of these factors
there are three types of network:
1. LAN (local area network)
2. MAN (metropolitan area network)
3. WAN (wide area network)
 LAN: - LAN stands for local area network. It is the computer network
within a very limited area like a single building or extended up to
small geometrical area with wire is called LAN. Wires and protocols used in
LAN must be of same type. It is simple and cheaper than other
networking system, security is provided because no any outsiders can
access the resources of a private network and it has a disadvantage
of covering small area that is within a kilometer in diameter.
Nodes in LAN are linked together with certain topology i.e.
 Ring topology
 Bus topology
 Star topology
*Advantages of LAN:
1. Fast with speed from 10 mbps to 10gbps.
2. Reliable in cost as no highly equipped technology is needed.
3. LAN is enable for sharing of resources i.e. files hardware devices
among the multiples users.
4. It is higly secure networking for sharing of data.
*Disadvantages of LAN:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Expensive to install.
Requires administrative tools.
Files server may fail.
Collision of data in the network.

MAN: -A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a large computer network that
usually spans a city or large area. A MAN is optimized for large geographical area
than LAN ranging from several block of building to entire city. A MAN typically
covers an area of 6 to 60 km diameter.
 Advantages of MAN :
1. High speed networking.
2. Covers a large area.
3. No collision of data
 Disadvantages of MAN:
1. Costly than LAN as different equipment of networking i.e. router,
hub,etc are used.
2. Loss of data or less secure than LAN.
3. High knowledge of networking is needed.

WAN: - WAN stands for wide area network. It is used to describe the computer
network spanning a regional, national or global area. It has a data transfer
speed of 1800 to 9600 bits per second. In this network communication is done
through communication satellites. It is mixture of different LAN and MAN, so it
is also called LAN of LAN. Internet is the best example of WAN.
 Advantages of WAN:
1. High speed.
2. Largest area networking.
 Disadvantages of WAN:
1. Costly.
2. High knowledge of networking needed.

Explaination of communication model.
The process of transmitting data/information/voice from one part of the
system to another part through communication is called data
communication.

Source is a device that generates data to be transmitted. E.g. computer,
workstation, telephone etc. Transmitter is the device that convert data into
transmittable signal. E.g. modem.
Transmission system can be signals line or communication channel or mediun that
carries data to be transmitted.
The receiver receives the signals from transmission system and convert received
signals into data that can be handled by destination devices.
