Continuing Medical Education Clinical Campus of Stony Brook University School of Medicine Updates In Oncology For GI Malignancies Colorectal Cancer Symposium Friday, March 10, 2017 Winthrop Research & Academic Conference Center Winthrop University Hospital x Mineola, New York Accredited by Winthrop University Hospital Approved for 4.0 CME-CE Credits Updates In Oncology For GI Malignancies Colorectal Cancer Sym Overview Approximately 1.1 million Americans are currently living with colon and rectal cancers. The average 5 year survival is 65.7%, which is one of the highest out of all cancer diagnoses, having improved from only 48% five-year survival in 1975. Eight percent of cancer diagnosis annually, as well as 8% of annual cancer deaths, are attributed to colorectal cancer. Approximately 4.4 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer at some point during their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. Rates for new colon and rectum cancer cases have been falling on average 3.2% each year over the last 10 years. Death rates have been falling on average 2.7% each year over 2004-2013. Early detection tests and staging test options are constantly evolving to try to reduce colorectal cancer risk and recurrence. It is important to have a multidisciplinary approach to this disease to stay current on laparoscopic and robotic surgical options, targeted therapies, chemotherapies, radiotherapy, and cancer vaccines. This course offers a gathering of clinical experts who will emphasize a multi-specialty team based approach to translating scientific knowledge into practice. Chemoradiation, molecular profiling of tumors, nextgeneration sequencing (NGS) test of short DNA sequences will be discussed. Planners of this course hope course participants will engage the faculty with thoughtful questions and leave with expanded medical knowledge and improved competence that will encourage changes in performance to improve care outcome for their patients. Learning Objectives At the completion of this program, the participant should be able to: • Apply the most current treatments in colorectal cancer (both surgical and non-surgical) • Evaluate surgical approaches in the treatment of colorectal cancer • Prescribe more effective neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy strategies to treat colorectal cancer • Summarize how immune-based strategies can detect colorectal cancer and how new immunological approaches can treat advance disease • Describe future therapies in colorectal cancer mposium Competencies This symposium will address the following ACGME/ABMS competencies: • Medical knowledge • Patient care • Practice-based learning and improvement Target Audience Oncologists, hematologists, colorectal surgeons, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, pancreatic cancer researchers, nurse practitioners, oncology-surgical nurses, residents and fellows.
