Definition and Background
• A dynasty is a family line of
hereditary rulers of a country.
• Sui Dynasty (Sway): brought China
back under one leader (in 589).
– Massive building projects and taxes
made people angry and they revolted.
The Tang Dynasty
• Came to power under Tang Taizong
in the 620s
• Taizong was the first Tang emperor
who expanded the empire.
• By 668, the Chinese held power
over Korea as well.
• Empress Wu Zhao held power in the
late 600s; made herself Emperor.
• She was a powerful leader

• China had a strong central government at this
time.
• It was a big country and took a lot of people
to run it.
• All the government workers together = a
bureaucracy
• Bureaucracy = a system of workers that make
decisions for the gov’t

• These gov’t workers have to be the best possible
• The gov’t set up a system of Civil Service Exams
to try to find the best people
• If you did very well on the exam, you could get a
very elite government job
• Usually, only the rich could really afford the
education and training to pass the Civil Service

• During the Tang and Song, many moved to cities.
• Others took the Civil Service Exam to get a new
life of government work with an honorable job.
• Because of the Civil Service system, a new
powerful class came about. This class was not
land-owning nobles
• They gained power by taking the Civil Service
Exam and getting important government jobs.

The Song Dynasty
• By 960, a military leader gained power
• He created the Song Dynasty
• Ruled over a smaller section of China than
the Tang, but they did it well for a while.
• They traded with northern Chinese, central
Asians, Western Asians, and Europeans.
• By 1100s, invaders from the north pushed
the Song south where they ruled that part
of China until 1279 when the Mongols took
over China, starting the Yuan Dynasty.

China’s Growth: Technologies
• During this time, China’s population,
economy, and technology grew a lot.
• Moveable Type: small blocks with individual
letters that could be arranged in a frame
then used to print pages made the recording
and passing on of information much more
efficient.
• Many other inventions came about in China
at this time: Gunpowder, Porcelain,
Mechanical clocks, Paper money, and
magnetic compasses for sailing

• Around 1000, a new type of fast-growing rice
• MORE FOOD led to MORE PEOPLE
• This led to artists and poets
• The Silk Roads and Oceans were used for
trade from China to Europe and everywhere

• Rich women were valued mostly for their beauty.
• Not supposed to do any work; look beautiful.
• To make sure that rich girls did nothing but look
beautiful, the custom of foot-binding was introduced
• It crippled girls’ feet as they grew. They could not walk
or move around very well. These small feet were a
symbol of wealth and beauty, although it was very cruel.
