FIXED CODE ENCODER DEBUTS
FOR REMOTE-CONTROL APPLICATIONS
CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 18, 1999 [NASDAQ: MCHP] — Microchip Technology Inc. today
debuted the HCS101 fixed-code encoder for low-cost remote-control systems, providing an ideal
entry point for unidirectional remote-control functionality in non-secure or limited-security
applications.
The highly integrated HCS101 is ideally suited to enable new remote-control
functionality in applications, such as toys, fan and lighting control, entertainment systems, miniblinds, material handling systems and smoke detectors. The HCS101 fixed code encoder is pin
compatible to Microchip's HCS201 KEELOQ code hopping encoder, allowing customers to
market two levels of security with a common reusable design. When appropriate, users can
easily migrate their design to a high level of security with Microchip’s pin-compatible HCS201.
Traditional high-security code hopping applications that may be complemented with a lower-cost
limited-security fixed-code implementation include automotive alarm systems, automotive
immobilizers, gate and garage door openers, identity tokens and burglar alarm systems.
The HCS101 has a 66-bit transmission code that reduces the threat of code scanning. The
HCS101 operates over a wide voltage range of 3.5V to 13V and has three button inputs in an
8-pin configuration, which allows the system designer the freedom to utilize seven functions.
The oscillator, timing components, EEPROM, button input pulldown resistors and battery low
detection circuitry are all integrated on the HCS101. The only components required for device
operation are the buttons, battery and RF circuitry, allowing a very low system cost.

ADD ONE – HCS101 FIXED CODE ENCODER
The use of the HCS101 requires a compatible decoder, which is typically a PICmicro
microcontroller solution with firmware. Microchip provides PICmicro firmware routines that
accept transmissions from the HCS101. These routines provide systems designers with the
means to develop their own decoding system.
The KEELOQ Evaluation Kit demonstrates the capabilities of Microchip’s code hopping
technology. Other development systems from Microchip include the PRO MATE II Universal
Programmer, including an In-Circuit Serial Programming socket.
Pricing for the HCS101 in 1,000-unit quantities is $0.70 each in 8-pin PDIP or SOIC
packages. Samples and volume production are available today. For more information, contact
any Microchip sales representative or authorized worldwide distributor.
Microchip Technology Inc. manufactures the PICmicro family of 8-bit RISC-based
microcontrollers—with OTP, Flash, and ROM memory technologies; serial EEPROMs;
KEELOQ code hopping devices; related microperipheral products including RFID, analog and
system supervisor ICs; and other specialized semiconductor products. These products target
thousands of embedded control applications in the consumer, automotive, office automation,
communications and industrial markets. Microchip’s quality systems are ISO 9001 (1994
version) and QS-9000 (1998 version) certified. Headquartered near Phoenix in Chandler, Ariz.,
Microchip employs approximately 2,000 people worldwide and has sales offices throughout
Asia, Europe, Japan and the Americas.
