Examples of how medicines management work may affect these groups of people may include:
Age: too young to understand letter (Fraser competence), elderly may have e.g. renal dysfunction,
arthritis, visual impairment, dementia, hearing problems, may have a carer who also needs
informing.
Disability: learning disabilities, mental health, visual or hearing impairment, do they have a carer?
Race: English literacy, specific race-related issues (e.g. Recommendations for hypertension and lipid
lowering medicines may be different for some ethnic groups)
Religion or belief: Gelatin products, strict vegans, fasting patients
Homeless: How are patients alerted to drug switches, issues regarding safe keeping of medicines
Limited family or social networks: may exacerbate other problems such as understanding of
medicine directions, accessibility to GP and pharmacist, visual impairment.
Geographical isolation: difficulty accessing services, obtaining medicines, getting advice
