Classifying Countries • TWO GROUP MODEL • THREE GROUP MODEL • FIVE GROUP MODEL Using Two Groups • Developed/Underdeveloped World • Developed/Developing World • North-South Developed vs. Underdeveloped • Classified by economic development • DEVELOPED: Canada, USA, Germany • UNDERDEVELOPED: Brazil, China, Nigeria, Jamaica PROBLEM: • Only measures ECONOMIC development • India and China are highly developed CULTURALLY Developed vs. Developing • This idea reflects the dynamic nature of the world • South Korea and Singapore were developing 50 years ago… now they are developed. North – South • Most developed countries are farther north than developing countries. PROBLEMS • Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina are southern countries but highly developed.
