Appalachian Plateau
-smallest, deep canyons and limestone caves
-Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia all meet in this corner
-Lookout Mountain is here
-mostly hardwood forests and pastures
-least traveled but very scenic
Ridge and Valley
-low open valleys and narrow ridges
-rocks resistant to erosion
-forests, pastures and fertile farmland
-grow grain and apples (Elijay) and raise cattle
-known for industry – textile and carpet (Dalton)
Blue Ridge
-highest and largest groups of mountains in the state are here
-the mountains block much of the precipitation for the rest of the state
-this area’s precipitation can exceed 80 inches a year and is generally a little cooler that
regions farther south
-shallow, easily eroded soil
-hardwood forests and some fruit and vegetables grow here
-Brasstown Bald is here and it is the highest peak in the state (5,000 ft)
-Appalachian Trail begins here and runs all the way to Maine
-beautiful area includes Amicalola Falls and Tallulah Gorge
-Helen is a major draw for tourists
Piedmont
-sloping hills and valleys in the northern section and flatlands in the southern section
-soil good for agriculture, hardwood and pine timber
-makes up 1/3 of the state’s land area
-contains ½ of the state’s population
-the most densely populated cities can be found here
-major rivers such as the Chattahoochee, Flint, Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers run
through this region
-agriculture includes wheat, soybeans, corn, poultry, cattle and many other products
-major businesses and industries
- climate - cool winters and hot summers with moderate rainfall
Coastal Plain
-makes up 3/5 of the state’s land area
-there are two parts – inner and outer
-inner has a mild climate and good supply of underground water – it is the major
agricultural region of the state.
-some of the agricultural products grown here are Vidalia onions, peanuts, corn and
pecans
-outer area doesn’t have good soil but pulp production, seafood production and tourism
are industries found here
-deep harbors can be found here and are good for shipping
-barrier islands protect the coast/beaches
-Okefenokee Swamp and Savannah River are both in this area
-climate – moderate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Rainfall averages 51
inches/year and there are occasional hurricanes in the fall
