Illness Anxiety Disorder
 Somatic Symptom Disorder
Characterized by physical symptoms and high anxiety
about having a disease
Interferes with carrying on normal life
 Illness Anxiety Disorder
Preoccupation with a serious medical condition with
either no or mild physical symptoms
Conversion Disorder
 Functional neurologic symptom disorder
 Characterized by loss of some bodily function without
physical damage
 Symptoms last as long as anxiety is present

Causes of Somatic Disorders
 Psychoanalysis
Unresolved, unconscious conflicts
 Behavioral
Reinforcements – attention and sympathy
 Cognitive
Faulty thinking and catastrophic thoughts lead
individuals to misinterpret normal bodily functions as
problematic
Dissociative Disorders
 Psychological disorders that involve a sudden loss of
memory (amnesia) or change in identity
 Heated debate in psychological community
Not all exist – product of an overactive imagination
 Two main types
 Dissociative Amnesia
 Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative Amnesia
 Loss of memory for a traumatic event or period of time
that is too painful for an individual to remember
 Dissociative fugue
 Dissociative amnesia + travel
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
 Formerly called multiple personality disorder
 When two or more distinct personalities are present
within the same individual
 Most common in people who have been victims of
physical or sexual abuse as a child
 Interesting research – handedness and brain scans
Personality Disorders
 Have longstanding, maladaptive thought and behavior
patterns that are troublesome to others, harmful, or
illegal
 Individuals do not experience anxiety, depression, or
delusions
 Three clusters
Odd/eccentric
Dramatic/emotionally problematic
Anxious or Fearful
